Race report: Southampton and Poole HEROES RUNs - October 1 & 2, 2011

It takes a certain type of person to embrace the sweltering heat, ignore the allure of a weekend lie in, quite possibly brush off a hangover and pour yourself into a lycra costume to run 5km around Southampton Common or Poole Park for charity.

It’s a well publicized fact that HEROES are becoming harder and harder to come by these days luckily for the charity Passing It On they managed to find about 150 of these HERO running types for their first ever Southampton and Poole HEROES RUN weekend.

The man in the photo is her husband Jamie Higham who was the first man home in a time of 19.02.

The HEROES RUN event has been running for 7 years in Brighton and the event now attracts between 1,000 and 1,200 runners every year. This is the first time the charity (Passing It On) has held its HEROES RUN anywhere outside of Brighton.

On Saturday 1ST October approx 100 runners dressed as various superheroes and HEROES lined up on Southampton Common to, not only launch another HEROES RUN event but raise money to support the Brighton based charity Passing It On.Passing It On raises money to build, support and develop three African School/Orphanage initiatives in Ghana, Gambia and Kenya.

Southampton’s HEROES RUN 5km race was won by David Mcneish, AKA the Hulk in a time of 19.22. The first female home was Hannah Mcneish in a time of 20.17 who had created her very own Superhero costume especially for the occasion.

The Poole HEROES RUN 5km race took place the following day on a gloriously sunny Sunday morning in Poole Park. With approx 50 runners it was a far more intimate affair but judging from the reactions of those involved it was just as successful an event as Southampton the day before.

The race was run by local GB cross country running legend (Hayley Higham aka Scottish Rocky Balboa) in an intimidating time of 18.26.In doing so Hayley also became the first woman to win a HEROES RUN race since the event started in 2005.The first male home was her husband Jamie aka (Superman) in a time of 19.02.

All the HERO runners involved seemed to have a great time and as long as they all bring a few of their Superhero mates next year these two new HEROES RUN events seemed destined to become annual fixtures in Southampton and Poole’s running calendar’s.
