Race report: Brathay Windermere Marathon and Brathay 10 in 10 Challenge - Sunday, May 20, 2012

The Brathay Windermere Marathon was a resounding success with nearly 800 runners setting off at 10.30am. Mike Jefferies came in first with an impressive time of 02:45:30 whilst in the women’s event last year’s winner, Nicola Shaw, came home first again in 03:15:48.

Second and third placed men were Peter Stockdale at 02:51:51and Paul Davies at 02:52:26. Second and third placed women were Mel Rotherham at 03:13:27 and Kathleen Aubrey at 03:21:16.

In the final day of the Brathay 10 in 10 challenge Sally Ford, from Kirkby Lonsdale, battled through the pain barrier yesterday to become the first women to win, despite the inconvenience of shin splints and ankle problems. She clocked off with a final marathon time of 03:38:02 making her total aggregate time 36:38:53, a staggering 2hrs and 39 minutes quicker than the previous women’s record.

She was delighted just to have finished, after such an injury, and despite her humility throughout the challenge, she displayed just a little pride today, after it was pointed out that she had finished ahead of the boys. “There’s been a bit of banter through the week and the lads keep saying they’ve been ‘chicked’. But it’s all been in good humour and the fact that I’ve posted the best time does give me a sense of pride.”

But perhaps the bigger story to come out of this year’s 10in10 event is the fact that all 18 runners completed challenge, proving beyond doubt that ordinary people can do extraordinary things.
