Thousands of supporters lined the course of the women's marathon, not deterred by the rain that soaked spectators and athletes alike.
Tiki Gelena of Etheopia took gold in a new Olympic record of 2:23:07, ahead of Kenya's Priscah Jeptoo and Russia's Tatyana Petrova Arkhipova.
Britain's Freya Murray, in only her second ever race over the distance, finished in 2:32:14 in 44th place and Claire Hallissey was 57th in 2:35:39. Mara Yamauchi's run was hampered by an injury and she pulled out in the early stages of the race.
