Race news: The Karrimor Great Trail Challenge - Keswick, June 9, 2013

The Karrimor Great Trail Challenge, already established as one of the biggest events of its kind in the North of England, will return to Keswick this summer. Staged by the organisers of the Bupa Great North Run, the event will see thousands of runners and walkers take over the trails of the market town on Sunday 9 June.

After celebrating its inaugural staging in 2012, it will return with brand new 11km and 22km distances - suitable for anyone from experienced runners to walkers.

The route will start in Station Field, near Fitz Park, before heading out along the old Keswick railway line and crossing the River Greta at Brundholme. Participants then turn towards Wescoe, climb the northern shoulder of Latrigg Fell before descending back to Keswick through Whinny Brow forest. The 22km course will consist of two laps of this route.

Participants and spectators will also have the opportunity to see world-class mountain runners compete in the Home Countries International match. Senior and junior athletes from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland will compete over the 11km distance.

Peter Riley, Project Director at Nova International said, “We were overwhelmed by the positive response from participants and locals to the 2012 event, and are excited about bringing the Karrimor Great Trail Challenge back to the Lake District.

“The event is a great day out, giving the public the chance to watch top athletes compete against each other in the Home Countries International Match, take advantage of local food and entertainment and even take part in the event themselves.”

The Royal British Legion has been selected as Karrimor’s nominated charity for 2013, recruiting members of the armed forces to compete against each other in the Team Forces Challenge. The charity provides practical, emotional and financial support to all members of the British Armed Forces past and present, and their families.

The event is open for entries at www.greattrailchallenge.org and participants will receive a medal, Karrimor Great Trail Challenge t-shirt, finisher’s pack and accurate chip timing.
