Race report: Tri-Adventure 4hr Experience, 2hr Sprint & 1hr Trail Run - Swinley Forest - Sunday, March 17, 2013

The unseasonal wintery showers did nothing to dampen the final event of the Swinley Forest Trilogy for Tri-Adventure – on the country (excuse the pun), record numbers turned out to brave the rain and mud!

Tri-Adventure 4hr Experience, 2hr Sprint & 1hr Trail Run - Swinley Forest - Sunday, March 17, 2013

A few quotes from the day:

Gil Cramer said, “Hi Guys, thanks for an awesome day out, will spread the word for the next race.”

Ben said, “I had a blast, I want to go back out’

Jeremy said, “I really enjoyed that, great course’

This event was the launch of the NEW 4hr Experience race, run in conjunction with the popular Sprint and Trail. The Experience could be entered as a pair or a solo entry, with excellent numbers of both it was clear our racers both old and new were ready for a tougher challenge. To keep everyone on their toes there were a few twists to the rules; mandatory check points being done in numerical order. Dave Rollins, course planner said, “the course was fast before the rain came as the ground was hard but now it’s a mud fest, this will be particularly challenging for competitors on bike. I have also added in a section of mandatory checkpoints on foot and bike which adds an extra element when planning your strategy.”

The wintery conditions outside made the warm and inviting registration hall a welcome haven for race preparations, free tea and coffee was consumed as everyone discussed the new rules for the experience and planned strategies around the mandatory checkpoints. Our partners Sweatshop had come along with some great kit and special offers for our participants to purchase, as well as expert advice on running shoes and apparel.

Dave Rollins (GB orienteering coach) and the friendly Tri-Adventure team were on hand to offer advice and strategy tips to the many first timers who’d come along – including a special briefing from Dave for our brave 12-14 year olds from Perse school in Cambridge who were taking part with their teachers.

Given the wet and muddy conditions a race briefing with heavy emphasis on health and safety issues was given, ensuring racers had tips on how to run and bike safely in the rain, had extra clothing and had their mobile phones. Gil Cramer from FIT Concepts kindly ran a pre-event warm up, getting everyone stretched and limbered up.

The Experience start was staggered, giving a 20 minute window to head off into the now sideways driving rain – unlike other events the mandatory checkpoints meaning everyone was off in the same direction!

Very few early finishers arrived back, everyone wanting to use the full time allocation or perhaps having gone overtime because of issues with the conditions! One thing was for sure, it was tough but the very muddy competitors were all grinning when they downloaded – fun was most definitely had!

The warm welcoming hall of Tri-Adventure HQ was a welcome haven for the finishers, hot showers, body massage and hot drinks with cake were waiting for all as they crossed the finish line. The warmth and refreshments were enjoyed as everybody dibbed in, had a welcome warm shower and all awaited the prize giving…

The next Experience will be on the 21st July and the Sprint on the 19th May, 16th June and 21st July – all hosted in Effingham, nr Guildford – for more info visit: www.triadventure.co.uk/next-race
