Organisers celebrate a successful Marathon of the North weekend

Race report: Marathon of the North weekend - April 27 & 28, 2013

Organisers of this weekend’s festival of running in Sunderland have reported a very successful series of events.  Centred on today’s Marathon of the North, Half Marathon of the North and Sunderland City 10k races, the weekend also included the BQ Team Relay and yesterday’s Junior Miles of the North.  The main three races today saw around 5,000 people running through the streets of the city, cheered on by thousands of spectators.

The weekend began with the Junior Miles of the North in Mowbray Park, which attracted around 150 boys and girls for a series of races around the park, in under 10, under 12, under 14 and under 16 categories (see note to editors for results).  The mile events were followed by the Asda Pasta Party in the Park, which included live entertainment by local acts and X-Factor and YouTube sensation Robbie Hance, and a runners’ workshop with event founder Steve Cram, leading North East runner Aly Dixon and physio Paul Hobrough.

Cool and windy conditions on Sunday provided a challenge to runners in all events.  Before the start of the marathon and half marathon, a minute’s silence in tribute to the victims of the Boston Marathon bombs was impeccably observed by all runners and supporters around the start area at the Stadium of Light.  The marathon, half marathon and team relay runners set off at 9.30am; at 10.00am, after another period of silence, the 10k was started.

The winner of the 2013 Marathon of the North was Jake Harrison, of Leicester Tri Club, who crossed the finishing line in 2:42:24 (gun time) – he led from start to finish.  He was followed by Stephen Tilford of Wakefield and District (2:45:34) and Paul Attley of Gateshead Harriers (2:46:09).  The first woman home was Jess Riches in 3:20:55, followed by Marie Sly (3:21:46) and Sarah Black of Hartlepool Burn Road Harriers (3:22:15).

The inaugural Half Marathon of the North was won by Mark Hood of Sunderland Harriers in 1:11:07, followed by Andy Burn of Jarrow and Hebburn (1:11:50) and Craig Isherwood (1:11:52).  In the women’s event, Stacey Rogers of Wallsend Harriers was first in 1:22:24, followed by Rebecca Rigby of Newcastle University CC (1:25:06) and Rosie Tarbuck (1:25:19).

The BQ Team Relay was won by a team from the Albert Park Runners in 2:47:12.

The 2013 Sunderland City 10k was won by Weynay Ghebresilasie of Sunderland Harriers in 32:51, followed by club-mate Nathan Reed in 34:20 and Paul Bentley of North York Moors in 34:24.  Aly Dixon won the women’s 10k in 36:58, followed by Elaine Lesley of Jarrow and Hebburn in 39:29 and Emma Rutley in 43:44.

Winner of the 2013 Marathon of the North Jake Harrison comments: “Of course, I am really happy to win the Marathon of the North.  It’s a good course with a bit of everything – a few turns, and some uphill and downhill sections.  The conditions were tough thanks to the strong wind, but the runners were well supported around the route and the event was well marshalled.  I really want to come back next year, but meanwhile I have an ironman triathlon this summer to train for.”

Steve Cram comments: “It’s been a great weekend.  The junior miles and pasta party were a big success yesterday, with the sun making a timely appearance for the races.  Today was a logistical challenge, thanks to the addition of the half marathon to the programme and 2,000 more runners across all of the events.  Add in a strong wind and it was tough at times out on the course.  However, I think the runners coped really well and were helped by loads of enthusiastic spectators.  Congratulations to everyone who took part and thanks to Sunderland City Council, all of the sponsors and the people of Sunderland for making this into such a special event.”
