Northampton Running Festival - March 31, 2013

31st march saw the return of the Northampton Running Festival to Delapre Park. The Easter Sunday race went ahead against the trend of recent race cancellations after a late course redesign due to partial flooding of the course. With over 400 athletes electing to swap their road shoes for the challenge of some beautiful off road racing.

The day started with the 10K race led home by Mark Ryall from Victoria Park Harriers in 36:34 ahead of David Glossy in second place overall and first Vet with D Weston coming home third. In the ladies race Linsay Birghall & Sarah Halford battled out a close race with Linsay claiming first by a narrow margin in 45:16 making it a clean sweep for Victoria Park. Third lady was Jane Simmonds. Age group wins were also awarded to Simon Bingham (V50), Mick Staines (V60) Sandra Fox (VF40), Mary Joyce (VF50), and Trisha Arnold (VF60).

The half marathon was a closely fought affair with the leading three staying in close contact until late on. Chris Lamb led the field from the gun and gradually drew away in the later stages to complete his victory in 1:16:56, ahead of Rod Harris, who was first vet home, and Andrew Siggs.

Sarah Harris from Team 9bar led the ladies race from start to finish, ending the day a commanding winner with a hugely impressive 4th place finish overall in 1:22:03. Behind her, Rachel Leckey and Saron Townley finished strongly in second and third, with Sharon also having the bonus of first veteran lady. Of particular note lower down the field were age group winners David Irwin (M50), Clive Miller (V60), Jacqueline Johnson (FV50).

Early in the Marathon Paul Adams from St Albans Striders & Paul Davies of Centurian RC set out fast and running together had already established a two minute lead over third placed John McKeon by the 10 mile mark. Paul Adams continued to push on completing each of the 12 laps within a minute of his first and slowly edged away from Paul Davies over the second half, eventually coming home in 2:49:05 with a lead of almost 10 minutes Paul Davies held on to second place, finishing as the only veteran inside 3 hours in 2:58:58. With John McKeon coming home third.

In the ladies race Katie Samuelson from Cambridge & Coleridge AC was the only lady inside the top 20 finishers winning the ladies race in 3:24:34 with Ingrid Harris (winner of the VF50 age category) and Emma Rathbone completing the winners podium. Also of note were Phil Grimes winner of the V50 category in 7th overall and Allan Green finishing first V60 and the first of many 100 marathon club runners in attendance.. Shona Bendix, and Rita Williams completed the age category prizes in the FV40 and FV60 categories.

With over 400 satisfied runners thankful for the efforts rearranging the course and ensuring that the race went ahead. Northampton Running Festival once again received universal acclaim for the course, organisation and support and this is set to be a great addition to the race calendar.

Marathon runner Kevin O’Reilly summed up the runners perspective, with just one of the multitude of positive comments received. “Fantastic location, fantastic course, just the right amount of runners, and above all a fantastic group of people who supported everyone so enthusiastically before, during, and after the race.”

Our thanks go out to Northampton Borough Council for allowing us to use such a beautiful venue, 9 bar, Mizuno and The Running Shop for their race sponsorship, BActiv for being on hand to repair and refresh tired limbs, to Richer Seas Photography for capturing the day for everyone’s posterity and all the marshals who repeatedly give up their time so that we can put on great races for you all to enjoy.
