What if you could have your cake (or chocolate) and eat it?

Product review: Run247 columnist Kirsty Reade tries out the new Multipower Power Layer Bar

Sports nutrition company Multipower has just launched a new protein bar – the Power Layer Bar – and we were lucky enough to be sent some to try.

You know how when you finish a long run/ride and you know you probably should eat something properly balanced for optimum recovery? But what you actually feel like (and most likely go for) is a chocolate bar of dubious nutritional value that you know is wrong but tastes oh so right. What if you could have your cake (or chocolate) and eat it? A recovery bar that’s properly balanced, with 33% protein (19.8g) and a high carbohydrate element (23.8g) but actually tastes as good as or even better than the dirty, bad-for-you, everyday chocolate bars.

I couldn’t believe how good it tasted. There’s a layer of nuts, caramel, crispies and chocolate and it isn’t really chewy like some energy bars. To prove it wasn’t just me I took some bars down to my running club for people to try post-run and it was like dropping chump into a sea of sharks. They’d gone in a matter of seconds and everybody really enjoyed them. Comments included ‘it’s like a mixture of a Snickers and a Milky Way’, ‘these could be seriously addictive’, and ‘this is way tastier than the current recovery bar I use’. So it wasn’t just me and I can tell you that these people aren’t easy to please!

The Power Layer Bar is definitely my new recovery bar of choice and I certainly won’t be sharing any more. You can buy them at some gyms or via www.multipower.com.

I really like the reviews of bars and nutrition but I was wondering if you could include whether they are Gluten Free or Vegan/vegetarian, that would then appeal to those of us who have to check ingredients before eating
