Race feature: With the 2013 The North Face® Ultra-Trail Du Mont-Blanc® fast approaching (August 26 to September 1) Run247 will be taking a closer look at this prestigious ultra-event in the weeks running up to race day

We are also offering you the chance to WIN an Enduro Plus Hydration Pack (£110) from The North Face - To find out how you can win, click here or check the details at the bottom of this article.

The North Face® Ultra-Trail Du Mont-Blanc® has grown hugely in reputation and popularity over the years and runners from all over the world want to take part. The support in Chamonix and around the course is legendary and the atmosphere during race week unique! There are also the family and friends of the thousands of runners, aspiring future or past participants, as well as passionate ultra running fans from around the world who take an interest in how the races develop.

Luckily for those who can not travel to Chamonix during race week, technology has developed at an even greater race than the popularity of the The North Face® Ultra-Trail Du Mont-Blanc®, and there are many ways of finding out what is going on!

Useful links

The website

The best starting point is the race website: www.ultratrailmb.com

Everything you need to know can be found here, including links to the sites highlighted below!

Social Media

The Facebook page is mostly in French, but there are photos and videos and all of the official notices come in English too!

You can also follow the The North Face UTMB on Twitter: @TNFUTMB and there is a hashtag for each of the four events: #UTMF13 #PTL13 #TDS13 #CCC13

Following a runner

Text updates

You can sign up for a live follow-up service from the course from August 10. (HERE)

This service will enable you to receive all the information available to the organisers about the runners (passage times at difficult control points: there about twenty of them spread out along the whole of the course; a halt by the runner) directly on your mobile phone in almost real time.

It costs 5€ to register for the service, plus 5€ (UTMB® runners) or 3€ (CCC® or TDS™ runners) per race number followed up.

If the odd update from checkpoints and Race HQ won't suffice, then runners can also rent a tag so that their progress along the route can be followed! (HERE)

Small and light, the tag is placed in the participants back-pack and turns on automatically before the race and allows family and friends to follow via PC, Mac, Tablet, or Smartphone!

For online results from all runners in the four races as they progress check out LiveTrail

Ultratrail TV is another great way of following the news without travelling to Chamonix! During race week it will provide live-coverage, news reports and interviews and will give access to all the different facets of this event:

  1. the races (organisation, volunteers, information, etc.)
  2. Mont Blanc Country - trail-running Country : broadcasts recorded in the mountains (OEil de l'EMHM) - the territories (Pays du Mont-Blanc, Vallée d'Aoste, Vallée du Trail Chamonix)
  3. race portraits
  4. technical advice
  5. health (medical research, anti-doping measures,...)
  6. broadcasting of all the conferences

Bonus viewing

If, after checking all of the above, you still haven't gone out for a run and feel the need for more virtual ultra-viewing, then there is a wide selection of videos available on Dailymotion

Useful kit and mementos

The North Face® Ultra-Trail Du Mont-Blanc® now has an official online store, that offers a good selection of useful kit and mementos - these are the race T-shirts (jackets, fleeces, bottles, bags, etc...) you know you'll be proud to wear, not only during the race but also at home!

Jez Bragg's 2013 UTMB Training - Part 1
