Race news: Bupa Great South Run - Sunday October 27, 2013
With two months to go until the event, the Bupa Great South Run is close to reaching its 25,000 runner entry limit, with over 22,000 people having signed up for the iconic 10 mile run in Southsea, Portsmouth on Sunday 27 October.
The event is now established as the world’s premier 10 mile road race, attracting leading athletes including World & Olympic Champion Mo Farah, who won in 2009.
The fast, flat route includes a section in the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, giving participants the unique opportunity to run past HMS Victory and the new Mary Rose Museum, dedicated to Henry VIII’s flagship which sank in 1545.
David Hart, Communications Director at organisers Nova said: “Last year we celebrated our biggest ever weekend, with around 30,000 people taking part in the Bupa Great South Run weekend series of events. We are expecting another record year in 2013 and look forward to the sea of runners on the start line this October.”
The weekend starts on Saturday 26 October with the Bupa Great South Run 5k, followed by over 2,000 budding athletes taking part in 2.5k and 1.5k Junior & Mini events. The great weekend of running in Portsmouth culminates with the 10 mile event on the Sunday, which is broadcast live on Channel 5.
The Bupa Great South Run weekend is a huge series of fundraising events for hundreds of charities, with runners raising money for a host of good causes. Last year an estimated £3 million was raised by runners for charity.
