Blog 3: Tim Heming has signed up for his first ultra, the Royal Parks Foundation Ultra - Hyde Park, October 6, 2013
A couple of years ago I was groggily pottering around a pub beer garden in Essex in my underpants, the acrid taste of vomit stripping the lining from my throat, and jealously eyeing my running buddy who was tucking into his Sunday roast.
It had been a balmy summer’s day in Essex, we’d just completed the glorious Halstead marathon and I’d got my nutrition wrong. Badly, irretrievably wrong.
It wasn’t a complex error. As the heat rose, and my powers waned I desperately threw down a couple of sports nutrition products and the gloop was having its post-race revenge.
Of course, it’s never one’s intention to mainline refined sugar in vast quantities but when the competitive instinct kicks in the mind focuses on anything it thinks will get you to the tape faster.
Now, as I settle into preparations for this year’s Royal Parks 50km Ultra (HERE) nutrition is a topic I need to conquer, not just during the hours in transit but pre and post race nosh too.
To help me out with some advice I called on experienced ultra runner, writer, foodie and founder of new natural nutrition brand, 33Shake, Warren Pole to give his thoughts.
