On 11th October, Lakes-based Open Adventure is hosting the inaugural 'Lakes In A Day' 48 mile ultra marathon, which follows an iconic linear route from Caldbeck to Cartmel over some of Lakeland's highest fells.
The route, which includes over 4000m of ascent, comes from organiser James Thurlow's passion for running in the remotest parts of the region. "This is a route that inspires me to get out and run", he explained. "It'll be spectacular and a true adventure. It really is a journey that takes the Lakeland High Road".
'Lakes In A Day' is linear, because "racers love the feeling that they're making a journey", explained Thurlow. The A to B format is one in which Open Adventure has a lot of experience, with their Coast to Coast cycle sportive and a linear expedition adventure race through Wales also on this year's calendar. Competitors will have the option of being bused from registration / finish in Cartmel to the start at Caldbeck. Further logistical details are on the website.
Clearly, having the right kit for such a wilderness challenge is essential, which is why Open Adventure has partnered with Haglofs to host 'Lakes In A Day'. Bruce Duncan from Haglofs UK explained that "This challenging event fits with our Outdoor Passion mindset; being self-sufficient no matter what the Lake District can throw at you". Duncan added that "Haglofs can't make the route any easier, but we can help competitors out by having available some of the best clothing on the market to keep them warm and dry even when their legs get tired!" Racers are expected to self-navigate and carry their own food and gear for safety, although there are also three well-stocked feed stations for savoury and sweet treats along the way.
The fee is £50 (before May 1st), which includes electronic timing, three feed stations and prizes for the top three.
