Race news: Surrey Half Marathon - March 9, 2014
The Surrey Half Marathon will get off the blocks for the first time in early March with support from Virgin Care. Organisers announced the new partnership today, with Virgin Care providing race equipment and keeping spectators entertained in the Race Village.
Virgin Care, as part of their commitment to support healthy living and active lifestyles in the local community, are supporting the event by providing running bibs and high visibility jackets for marshals. Over 17,000 spectators are expected to attend the event.
Dr Ian Wiles, director at Virgin Care said: “We’re excited to be sponsoring the Surrey Half Marathon in its first year and to support the community to get fit and stay healthy. Some of our staff will be taking part as runners and volunteers on the day and we’re looking forward to being part of a fantastic event.”
The starting gun for the 5,000-strong Surrey Half Marathon will be fired at the Guildford Spectrum Leisure Centre at 10am on Sunday 9th March with runners led by cyclists from local group WindyMilla through Woking, before turning back for the trip towards the finish line.
Six bands from Surrey playing jazz, samba, rock and more will set the pace along the route, while an expected 17,000 spectators will cheer runners on from spectator stands.
Virgin Care run a range of NHS community services around Surrey including the walk in health centre and Community Hospital in Woking as well as the Sexual Health Clinic in Guildford.
Toby Jenkins, Surrey Half race director said: “We welcome the new partnership that now secures the Surrey Half Marathon as a significant road run event in the UK. It is great news to partner with Virgin Care and we look forward to delivering a fantastic inaugural race.”
Registration for runners remains open until 24th February, with information on prizes and charities on the event’s website at www.surreyhalfmarathon.co.uk.
