Perfect conditions at the Northampton Running Festival

Race report: Northampton Running Festival 10k, Half and Full Marathon - April 20, 2014

The dire weather that was forecast for the 2014 Northampton Running Festival did not arrive and in fact the cool slightly drizzly day was near perfect for running.

This was particularly true for the marathon runners who had the longest day at the office and also a good day for the ladies who occupied second and third places on the podium behind the convincing winner, Paul Davies. The ladies race was a corker with Bethany Thompson finishing just under a minute ahead of Katie Samuelson, who was closing fast on the last lap. Marianne Lee also had a strong race finishing third.

In the men’s race Paul Stead edged out Mark Jefford to take second place, just 12 seconds behind Katie

The Half Marathon probably saw the standout performance of the day with Daniel O’Boyle ripping up the course to finish first in 1:18:35 and his opening three laps would have also won the 10k race. Trying to hang on to this blistering pace was Will Carter, who was second just ahead of Martyn Clarke in third.

In the ladies race Dorota Brynkiewicz led after the first lap but was passed shortly before the end of lap two by Hannah Rogan, who went on to be first lady and 11th overall in a very competitive field. Second was Maria Calleia who passed Dorota on the third lap, the latter finishing in third place.

In the 10k it came down to a thrilling sprint finish which came out of a four way tussle at the front of the field. Nick Coleman led the field after lap one but was passed by Lee Berrill and Rob Foulkes on the second lap. In the sprint to the line at the end of the third and final lap Rob got the better of Lee by just two seconds while Chris Storey just pipped Nick by three seconds for third.

In the ladies race Kerry Dodsworth put in a pretty dominant performance but the race for the other two podium positions was very tight with only 17 seconds separating the 3 ladies. Jennifer Chrystie sneaked in just three seconds ahead of Katie Fowler who held off Stephanie White by a further 14 seconds.

The marshals around the course were fantastic and added to the cheers the runners got from their supporters in the start/finish area. It was also good to see the lake trail back in use following last year’s flooding.
