Race feature: Brighton Half Marathon from 1990 to 2015
One of the most established half marathons in the UK race calendar, the Brighton Half Marathon, gears up to celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2015.
The seaside city race is now one of the most popular races in the country, with nearly 7,000 runners finishing in 2014 and entries to the 2015 race on February 22nd selling fast.
The race began in 1990 by a small group of local people and started on Hove Lawns on the seafront. The money raised from the race was used to help fund the building of The Sussex Beacon, the Brighton-based charity which provides specialist care and support for people affected by HIV. The Sussex Beacon still organises the Brighton Half Marathon today and the race is the charity’s biggest annual fundraising event.
Last week the race was also announced part of the new national Vitality Run Series, which features seven of the UK’s leading half marathons plus a 10K.
To celebrate its big birthday in 2015, organisers are keen to hear from anyone with a story to tell from one of the early races.
Do you, or anyone you know, have the full medal haul from all 24 races to date or have a tale to tell from the race’s history?
Send in your photos and race stories to half.marathon@sussexbeacon.org.uk
