Race news: Asda Foundation Hull 10K - Sunday, June 8, 2014

The countdown is underway for Sunday’s popular Asda Foundation Hull 10K which is on course to be the biggest in the event’s five-year history.

Over 5,000 people are expected to take part – a record field for the run organised by Jane Tomlinson’s Run For All.

The streets will come alive as thousands of spectators line the route to cheer on the runners, taking part for one of the event’s partner charities or a worthy cause of their own choice. The race has raised over £500,000 since it was first held in 2010.

Starting and finishing in the city centre, the course takes runners along the Humber, past some of the city’s best-loved landmarks, including the Marina and The Deep, and through Hull’s historic heart.

Among those taking part are Bobby and Angela Pye, of Beverley Road, Hull, running in aid of the Hull and East Riding Branch of the Nicholls Spinal Injury Foundation, which they set up after their son, Stephen, was struck by a virus which left him paralysed from the chest down. They will be joined by their youngest son, John, and other supporters.

Chris Wilson, 22, a wheelchair user since birth, is taking part in his first 10K as part of a team to raise funds for Hull Stingers In Motion wheelchair basketball team.

The field will also include hundreds of businessmen and women taking part in the KC Hull 10K Corporate Challenge, in which teams will be out to show that theirs is the fastest firm in the city. The times of the first three team members home are used to award the trophies and prizes.

Event lead Charlie Tatman said: “The response to this year’s Hull 10K has been fantastic and the 2014 run promises to be the biggest and best yet. We hope all those taking part have a brilliant day.”

Asda Foundation manager Jane Ward said: “It is absolutely tremendous that people are turning out in record numbers to take part in the Asda Foundation Hull 10K. We are proud to be associated with such a popular event that benefits a great many charities. We wish all the participants the very best of luck.”

The event’s partner charities are Echoes Foundation, CLIC Sargent, Martin House Children’s Hospice, Dove House Hospice, Macmillan Cancer Support, Candlelighters, Yorkshire Cancer Research, Hull and East Riding Breast Friends, Hull Children’s University and Jane Tomlinson Appeal.

The Asda Foundation Hull 10K is supported by the Asda Foundation, KC, Hull City Council, The Hull Daily Mail, Viking FM, MKM Building Supplies, Arco, Runners World, Powerade, Run247 and Muscle Milk.
