The Wall Took place between Carlisle and Newcastle - June 21 & 22, 2014

A record breaking 843 people completed the largest ultra-marathon in the UK, The Wall.

Organised by Rat Race Adventure Sports, The Wall saw participants complete a cross-country Ultra marathon journey through 69 miles of Hadrian’s Wall country between Carlisle Castle and Newcastle Gateshead Quayside.

The run started at 1000 year-old Carlisle Castle, where runners burst over the drawbridge to commence their adventure. The way-marked route then linked a number of pit stops evenly spaced throughout, all located in fascinating and glorious places, such as Lanercost Priory and Hexham.

Following a superb running line across Northern England, some participants completed the challenge as one single 69 mile stage, while others enjoyed a well needed break halfway in the overnight location at Vindolanda situated right next to 2000 year-old remains of a Roman fort. The sense of history was all around as the runners tackled the hilliest part of the route here in Northumberland National Park.

Launched in 2012, The Wall has achieved almost cult status due to its iconic credentials. It has been widely praised for both the quality of its delivery and its completion rate: 90% of the 843 runners completed the route this year; making it by far the largest Ultra on the UK calendar in 2014. This year the event was won by Andrew Richardson from Boston, Lincolnshire who completed the race in just 10 hours, 23 mnutes.

The run has been created by Rat Race, the UK’s leader in adventure sports events. The company is currently enjoying massive growth, seeing numbers rocket for their various challenges, ranging from Ultra runs to iron-distance triathlon, bike events and adventure races. The firm, which was formed by ex-Red Bull events manager Jim Mee in 2004, expects to cater to some 70 000 participants in 2014 making it one of the largest single operators of mass-participation sports events in the UK.

Jim Mee, Rat Race MD and creator of The Wall said of the event: “This year's The Wall event was our biggest ever and I’m so pleased to see more and more runners pushing themselves to ever longer distances”.

“Everyone knows Hadrian’s Wall and it provided a superb backdrop for us to create a running route that is at-once beautiful, do-able and memorable. Plus who doesn’t love a beer tent halfway through something like this?”

He added “if you missed out this year, entries to The Wall 2015 open on June 30th this year”.

The Wall will take place on 20th and 21st June 2015. Entry will remain open until capacity is reached. It costs £165 per person for Solo Entry into the 1-day event.
