Race report: Ikano Robin Hood Marathon, Half Marathon and Mini Marathon - Nottingham, Sunday, September 28, 2014

11,144 runners took to the sunny streets of Nottingham in yesterday’s 34th Ikano Robin Hood Half, Full and Mini Marathons.
Kenyan, Matthew Kimutai was crowned champion of the men’s half marathon race in a time of 64 minutes and 21 seconds. Alistair Watson from Notts AC, who came 2nd in the half marathon with a race time of 67 minutes, 41 seconds commented: “There’s nothing better than running in your hometown with such fantastic support from start to finish. I love a flat, fast course and I’m really chuffed with today’s result.”
The Kenyans also took home the title of the women’s half marathon race with Gladys Kwambai crossing the line in 74 minutes and 22 seconds. Second position went to Emma Schuck, from Hayle Runners with a race time of 81 minutes 21 seconds. The 29 year old from Cornwall raved about the energetic crowds and the support throughout the course but admitted it was a tough challenge for her being so used to her hilly hometown training runs. “The course was super flat today – a race that I will definitely compete in again with a little more flat, road race training!”
Robin Hood and Maid Marian set the 7,246 half marathon runners on their way.
The full marathon saw 1,495 runners tackle the 26.2 mile route, which took in a number of iconic Nottingham landmarks including Colwick Country Park, Holme Pierrepoint and Nottingham Castle. First place finisher in the men’s event was Pere Capdevila crossing the line in 2 hours, 28 minutes, 33 seconds accompanied by rapturous support across the Victoria Embankment. The women’s marathon was won by Kay Walsha in a race time of 2 hours, 54 minutes, 06 seconds. Second place went to Melissa Pritchard of 2 hours 58 minutes 07 seconds.
2014’s new look race village at Victoria Embankment was “bigger and better than ever” and provided an outstanding spectacle for runners and spectators alike. A sea of green runners took to the course donning the famous Robin Hood hat and cape to complete their race. The newly routed home straight provided the “perfect cheering point” for families, cheerleaders, stilt walkers and Robin Hood.
Nick Pearson, Managing Director of Sweatshop commented: “Once again the city of Nottingham has demonstrated how to host such a tremendous event and I’d like to congratulate all the volunteers, spectators and runners themselves for contributing to such an exciting day. The amount of runners donning vests for their athletics club and chosen charities was truly inspiring!
“We would also like to thank all of our event partners and sponsors who without them such an event would not be possible. We cannot wait to return to Nottingham in 2015 where we hope the event can go from strength to strength.”
Vivienne Saunders, from headline sponsor Ikano says: “What a fantastic advert for running yesterday’s event was. The race village was buzzing as families and friends cheered home their loved ones as they accomplished their personal goals. We at Ikano feel extremely privileged to sponsor this event and look forward to doing so for years to come!”
