The annual Charterhouse Club Trail Run was held on Sunday 19th October 2014 for the fifth year running, attracting over 200 entrants from the local area. The weather held for the morning and the sun even shone as spectators cheered on the runners who took part in the 1km Fun Run, 5km, 10km and challenging 15km races around the school playing fields and woodland trails.

The successful event was organised by Charterhouse Club with event partners The Godalming Toy Box, Bevan Wilson Physiotherapy & Sport Injuries Clinic and the Bramley based store Tortoise and Hare Running Specialist, all supporting the event.

Throughout the morning the atmosphere at the Club grew as spectators gathered to cheer on the runners. The Fun Run, which took place on the school playing fields, started first at 10am and medals, sponsored by The Godalming Toy Box were given out to all children who took part. This was closely followed by the start of the chip timed 5km, 10km and 15km runs at 10.30am.

Race organiser Josie Tidbury from Charterhouse Club commented ‘We were really thrilled with the turn out this year which was better than ever. It was a lovely day and a great atmosphere with the new Fun Run really adding to the occasion, making it a truly family event. We will definitely be including it in our plans again for next year. We were very grateful to our event partners for helping support this great event’.

The 1km Fun Run proved very popular with families, with over 60 young children taking part. It was jointly won by two brothers, Ben Flatau (9) and his brother William (7) and after crossing the finish line, they commented: “We enjoyed the run and it was great to finish together. The route was clear to follow and we had lots of fun taking part. We are really pleased with our medals.”

Their father Simon, an event sponsor from the Tortoise and Hare Running Specialist store in Bramley, added: “The Tortoise and Hare has sponsored the Trail Run over the years and it has grown in popularity. I think it’s great that the Club decided to introduce the Fun Run as it’s so nice to be able to enjoy a running event as a family. I particularly like this event and have taken part in the Trail Run before. I ran the 10km in 2012 and came second in the 15km last year so I decided to enter the 5km this year.”

Other fun run participants included Graham and Sue Williams who ran the race with their young grandsons, Reuben (3) and Gabriel (6), commented: “It was great to take part in the Fun Run with the grandchildren and the weather was just fantastic. I also ran the 10k for the first time. There was a super atmosphere as it was such a friendly event and so well organised by the Club.”

With marshals stationed around the clearly marked out 5km loop, the 5k, 10k  and 15km runners started at 10.30am and headed out across Charterhouse school’s sports field and into nearby woodland, giving them the ideal opportunity to enjoy running in the scenic woodland trails around the school whilst experiencing some challenging uphill climbs and fast downhill sections.

54 runners in total took part in the 5km event and it was won by Simon Flatau with a finish time of 21 minutes 3 seconds. The first woman to finish was Isabel Russell with a finish time 27 minutes and 2 seconds. Isabel commented: ‘It’s the first time I have taken part in a trail run. The course was tough but well worth doing and would definitely do it again’

In the 10km event, 67 people took part and the run was won by James Adams in 43 minutes and 21 seconds. The first woman to finish was Tania Oko, in 56 minutes and 54 seconds. One of the runners who took part in this event, Elaine Kieran commented: “It’s a tough but a lovely run. I come from London and am used to park runs but this is a good route that’s a constant challenge”.

And in the 15km run 32 runners took part and it was won by Christopher Peck in 1 hour, 5 minutes and 15 seconds and the first woman to complete it was Natasha Swan in 1 hour, 19 minutes and 56 seconds. Andrea Thomas who was the second woman to complete the 15km run said on finishing: “This is the third time I have done this run and it’s such a good cross country race. It’s excellent training for marathon runners”.
