Night Fright 8.5k

The Night Fright event took place on the evening of 25 October. Children and their families took part in a spooky walk, exploring the dark woods by torchlight. Too many sweets and glowsticks, spooks in the wood and face painting made for a great evening.
The Night Fright Night Run took runners 8.5km through the woods and up a few challenging climbs.

Yeovil Montacute parkrun

Sharing the course with the resident sheep; the crowds go wild!;Katie Brooks is paced to a new personal best.
There was a bumper turn out of 171 runners at Saturday's Yeovil Montacute parkrun, with the parkland looking lovely in the autumnal sunshine. Before the run started we had a very popular presentation as parkrun stalwart and Core Team member Neil Biss received his 50 Club t-shirt from run Director Steve Allen.
In the run, we had another new Course record from parkrun tourist Ben Fairhill who lowered his own record (previously 17m010) to 17m09 – this comes from his weekly training at the aptly named Hilly Fields parkrun in Lewisham no doubt! Second place was taken by Kevin Blundy who was also on his second appearance at Montacute – his performance was even more impressive, taking over 5 and a half minutes off his previous time to finish in 18m04 (23m48 last time out). Third place went this week to Jason Scott who finished in 18m15.
In the Ladies’ run, Clare Martin was first lady (21st overall) over the line in 22m35 – this is the 4th time in 9 appearances at Montacute that she’s finished as leading lady. Holly Bigger of Langport Runners, was second (27th overall) in 23m29, ahead of Rose Appleby of Yeovil Town RRC (29th overall) in 23m48. Lesley Nesbitt (50th overall) had the highest age graded result today, 80% exactly for her time of 25m20.
Well done to Katie Brooks who ran her 9th parkrun today – and with the assistance of Brian Mountjoy-Row as pacer, smashed 3 minutes off her personal best time as she finished in 31m47!
There were a few parkrun tourists here this week – the Graham-Maw family made another visit, with Abby and Julia Graham-Maw finishing either side of “the Ginger Kenyan” as he’s known in London Marathon circles (Rod Appleby when he’s running with us!) in 24m04, just ahead of fellow tourist Vici Richardson (we like her – she tells everyone on Facebook we’ve got a beautiful parkrun!), and John Graham-Maw finished in 27m57. Martin Bussas came all the way from Germany for his first ever parkrun, finishing in an excellent 21m15 (must have heard how good it is here!) whilst Martin & Jancy Stuttard travelled from Nottingham to finish in 62nd and 69th places respective.

Accrington 10K

Photo: Race winner Ben Fish |
Sunday's 29th annual race took place in typical Autumnal conditions. Whereas the rain decided not to pay a visit, the overcast day provided a strong headwind over the long two mile uphill stretch between mile two and mile four. The only other distraction for the 337 finishers was a 200 yard road and pavement upgrade close to mile five. The list of pre-entries topped last years total entry number and the final total was more than 100 up on last year.
First across the line was Ben Fish and with his team mate Rachel Wood being the first lady home it was a good bay for Blackburn Harriers AC. Ben's time of 32:51 was almost a minute ahead of Alasdair McLeod of Shettleston AC. Alasdair had travelled down from Aberdeen for a family gathering in Preston and along with several other family members entered our race. Two of that party were Suzanne Bailey, who finished third, just two seconds behind local runner Claire Vincent, and Rebecca Harding, a further 20 seconds back in fourth. Third man home was Jonny McCann a Clayton Harriers team mate of Claire Vincent.
Bolton Road Runners selected the race as one of their club races and had 53 members in the race taking back with them several prizes. Runners came from as far away as the aforementioned Aberdeen and Farnborough. Most of the local running clubs were represented.

Record numbers took part in the Peter Driver Fleet 10k memorial race. Organisers, Fleet and Crookham AC, were delighted that the race went ahead without hitch in near perfect running conditions.
First over the finish line was Gareth Watkins in 32.56, followed by last year’s winner Mark Symes in 33.16 , both men being in the over 40 Veteran category. Earlier in the year Gareth Watkins had also won the Fleet Half Marathon, another race organised by Fleet & Crookham AC. Third man home was senior Stephen Gumbrill of local running club Hart Road Runners in the time of 34.05.
First lady home was senior Hannah Lord also from Hart Road Runners with a time of 38.01. Hannah is also used to winning having recently won the first race of the Southern Cross Country League at Pamber Heath. Freya Davis (under 20) from Basingstoke & Mid Hants AC came in second in a time of 38.50, followed by veteran (+40) Mel Brookes, unaffiliated, in 39.12
First men’s team were Aldershot & Farnham District (AFD) made up of Brian Wakem, Tom Bowerman and Austin Soame and first ladies team were Hart Road Runners made up of Hannah Lord, Sarah Lewis and Clare Marett.

Race Director Rich Jackson said after the race “With a record number of finishers this year, we were bowled over by the level of support for our annual 10k race. Looking at 900 runners lined up at the start was an awesome sight indeed as was Fleet Road which was lined with 100’s of supporters. On top of this we had almost 100 volunteers in the background ensuring that everything went off without a hitch from marshals, to registration, water station attendants, sports masseuses, photographers and our Junior section athletes who manned the water and medal station at the finish. Ridgeway BMW sponsored our text result service and provided us with a Lead Car, Queens Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Clinic provided all of our winners trophies and Sweatshop in Woking printed our race numbers, provided discount vouchers for all runners and assisted with our prize vouchers. To add to the runner experience we provided an Ice Cream van, fresh coffee van, free face painting and courtesy of three photography degree students from Farnborough Technical college, free race photos are available on our Flickr page. We had ideal weather conditions with no rain, a dry course and some cloud cover, we couldn't have ordered better. I’d also like to pay a special thanks to Barbara Williams from Hart District Council for her invaluable assistance with our road closures and to Hampshire County Council for the emergency pothole repair on Friday!”
The race also incorporates a 5k run which was won by senior Daniel Black of AFD in a time of 19.19 and first female was under 16 Charlie Parsons in 22.44.
Fleet & Crookham AC have already started to prepare for next year's Brooks pre-London Fleet Half Marathon, which takes place on Sunday 22nd March 2015. Race Director Penny Abbott was delighted to announce that despite the on-line entries going live only a couple of weeks ago over 1000 places have already been snapped up. Last year’s race was filled before the end of the year and therefore runners are urged to get their entries in early. This can be done on-line by visiting the race's web.site www.fleethalfmarathon.org.uk

Montane Trail 26 Rivington
After an extra hour in bed the Rivington Trail 26’ers lined up on what was a glorious autumn morning. There were smiles all round and everyone looked eager to get out onto the hills.
Due to the recent rain the course contained a variety of terrain, from rocky (boulders) paths to rutted fields and ending in a glorious dance across the “bog of eternal stench”. The rule was simple “commit 100% or lose a trainer to the bog”.
Out of a field of 149 hitting the hills of Rivington and Darwen everyone returned smiling.
Prizes were kindly donated by Montane and Chia Charge and Paul Sanderson Physiotherapy provided free massages to the race finishers.
First place was taken in an impressive time of 3hrs 26mins 44secs by John Danahay who committed 110% and had absolutely nothing left in the tank upon crossing the finish line. He was followed by Andy Davies in second place in a time of 03:29:44 and Matty Brennan in third in 03:32:46
In the women's rankings, first place was smashed with a time of 3hrs 57mins 45secs by Josie Greenhalgh who looked like she could have done the route all over again when she danced across the finish line. In second place was Tracy Entwistle in 03:59:48 and in third place was Mel Price in 04:41:05
The next Trail 26 & Trail 13 race will be at Grizedale Forest on Sunday 8th February 2015. Please see the website www.trail26.com for details and follow on Twitter and Facebook to keep up with all the gossip.

Ricky Road Run

This 10 mile road race around Chorleywood and Rickmansworth celebrated its 31st year. After having nearly 500 runners sign up online before the race, 430 runners managed to complete the undulating course, in perfect running weather; the rain stayed away!
The race record was broken this year! The fastest time for the race was just 56 minutes 21 seconds – completed by Paul Adams from the St Albans Striders, who lead the race by nearly 3 minutes.
Full Ricky Road Run results can be found through the RRR website.
This year saw charity stalls, an ice cream van and the returning band singing runners across the finish line. Many people came together to raise thousands and on the day the support was incredible; we have had a lot of positive feedback on the excited atmosphere.
The race organisers would like to say a huge thank you to anyone who helped out on the day and throughout the organising process, without you the race couldn’t have gone ahead.
It was a fantastic success and will return once again next year!
You can find out more about the Ricky Road Run at the website (www.rickyroadrun.co.uk) or by following them on Twitter @Ricky_Road_Run

The Stickler

Some 387 runners were greeted across the finish line of ‘the Stickler’ cross country running race, also known as Dorset’s 3 Peak Challenge.
Competitors raced through 10.1 miles of hilly Dorset countryside including the infamous ‘stickle path’, Okeford, Hod and Hambeldon Hills, before finishing along the Platform of the Shillingstone Railway Project. The conditions were ideal; cloudy, with an average temperature of 15 degrees and a slight breeze along the hill tops.
The race was won by Anthony Clark from Poole Runers in 1:05:42, with Daisy Hall from Stubbington Green Runners taking the ladies first prize in 1:18:02.
A special prize went to Jean Henry of Westbourne RC, who has completed all 20 Stickler races and she also won first place in the FV50 category.
First Mens Team was Basingstoke & Mid-Hants and first Ladies Team was Bournemouth AC
