Race report: 31st Zurich Maraton de Sevilla - Sunday, February 22, 2015

Portuguese Filomena Costa (2h28:00) and Kenyan Lawewnce Cherono (2h09:39) are the winners of the 31st Zurich Maraton de Sevilla, the flattest marathon course in Europe with 11500 participants, crossing the city centre and main monuments of Seville, (Andalusia, Spain).

With 11,500 participants, the Zurich Maraton de Sevilla has been a fast and sunny race in one of the earliest marathon of the season. Filomena Costa (POR) celebrated today her birthday getting her first victory in this distance with an impressive 2h28:00. Kenyan Lawewnce Cherono pulled away and got a short but enough split to Jafred Chirchir Kipchumba to get the victory, with the second best time in history of this race.

Filomena Costa has turned 30 and she celebrated on the top of the Zurich Maraton de Sevilla podium with an awesome victory. She improved her personal best in three minutes. After the half marathon (1h14:04) she pushed and kept the lead of the race till the finish line, in a smooth way. Tsegaye Bekele (2h33:49), from Ethiopia, was second, and Kenyan Mercy Jelimo Too (2h34:52), third in a thrilling race. Spanish newcomer Marisa Casanueva, finished 6th.

The battle for the male victory was very interesting. A pack of thirteen athletes from Eritrea, Kenya and Ethiopia run together to the half marathon (1h03:49), but Cherono pulled away with a strong attack and got 15-20 ahead Jafred Chirchir Kipchumba, the main favourite. Cherono run on his own to the finishline, but he only could keep the pace till km 35 (3’02), but it was enough to win at the Finish Line on the same track of the Olympic Stadium that hosted the Athletics World Championship in 1999. Jafred was second (2h10:26) and Bernard Kipkorir Talam, third (2h11:33). Finally, the top-3 was from Kenya. Spanish Jose Carlos Hernandez was 6th in 2h16:52.

Zurich Maraton de Sevilla –awarded IAAF Bronze Label, is the flattest marathon course in Europe. The event is opening its door to the international runners community and has a new and absolutely flat race course in one of the most scenic venue possible, in the city centre of Seville, crossing all the main monuments and historical streets. Two months ago was sold out, with11,500 registered athletes.

Filomena Costa: “I’m so happy for this victory, I get my personal best and my first victory in marathon distance, and it’s my birthday! I’m now so confident to keep training for the World Championship this summer. This is a wonderful race, the fastest I’ve ever seen. There were many people cheering us! The weather conditions in February here are amazing”.

Lawewnce Cherono: “I felt so good in the middle of the pack, but I realised that Jafred could have a better pace than me and Bernard is a great contender as well, so I pulled away and tried to push hard. Before the race I didn’t think I would have the chance to win, but during the race I knew it was my day. This course is totally flat, it’s nice and incredible fast, with many spectators everywhere. I will be coming back to Seville next February to run it again”.
