News from Orkney’s William Sichel

Orkney-based ultra marathon runner, William Sichel (61) returns to South Wales this week for the Barry 40 Mile track race - Britain's longest established ultra event of any kind.

William last competed in Barry 12 years ago and this is his shortest race since that date. “After 2003 I tended to focus more on much longer events especially 24 hour races.  I also had two successful attempts at the iconic Spartathlon in Greece and then moved up in duration again to multiday races which seemed to suit me better.”

The Barry event will feature a very classy field of 22 runners headed by England's Commonwealth marathon runner and British 100km record holder Steve Way. Geoff Oliver – the multiple world record holding Leicestershire runner will also be going for more records at the tender age of 81.

William decided to have another go at this race as an antidote to running 3100 miles on the streets of New York last summer. “I felt it was time to turn the clock back and get some speed in my legs again.  A 40 mile time trial like this where you are running as fast as possible, is a very tough, non-stop hard run and will be a really good test for me.  There are also a few record opportunities too.”

William will post his result and comments on his blog at wwww.williamsichel.co.uk/blog

William hopes to high-light the benefits of exercise for the over 60s as well as raise money for the CLAN cancer support charity, with over £10,000 having been raised by William and those involved in the “Challenge William” project.  William's dedicated web page can be found here: http://www.justgiving.com/William-Sichel

William is working on Project165.com in which he is attempting to have set 165 ultra running records before his 65th birthday on October 1st 2018.  His current total is 153 records.  William is grateful to main sponsors the Orkney Islands Council.
