IGNITE is PUMA’s new urban shoe; at London’s launch event, PUMA’s product manager Mark Miles explained, “IGNITE is PUMA’s most responsive running shoe, designed for maximum energy return, comfort and durability. Powering every stride is IGNITE Foam, a proprietary foam which provides responsive cushioning and optimal rebound. IGNITE Foam is a PU blend created based on extensive research of high-energy return and longer durability. Additionally, the PU blend provides superior energy return and immediate step in comfort. ForEverFoam is integrated in the heel to disperse impact and provide extra durability for long-lasting performance.” It uses technology from the automotive industry (where I am told the same material is used in 9/10 shock absorbers and gives more durability over standard EVA).

PUMA are encouraging runners to #IGNITELONDON and compete against the other cities in the world to become the most ignited city. PUMA invited me to test the shoes on the streets of East London and #IGNITELONDON. The pair that I was given to try were a very appealing combination of blues and orange. Apparently the IGNITE collection draws inspiration from the colours, speed and shape of a comet, I could only hope that I would be able to move as fast as a comet whilst wearing them.

When we arrived at our starting point of Leadenhall Market we were divided into teams to solve clues and attempt to conquer the course in the quickest time. We were briefed by PUMA athlete Chris Thompson and then were given an Ignite envelope including clues about the location of the first glow stick that we needed to collect. My team included PUMA ambassador Susan Partridge and, despite her impressive record at marathon distance, I was determined not to lose her!

Our first ‘sprint’ was to Puma Court near Liverpool Street. There was a little commuter dodging to be done, but we made it there together (just). From here it seemed a fairly short distance to hip club venue ‘Cargo’ in the East End and we ended up at the Barbican centre. Our knowledge of the East End possibly let us down, but we finished in second place, so not a bad result and the ‘treasure hunt’ was definitely more fun than my usual running loops.

As for the IGNITE shoes, they felt light, but incredibly comfortable. I didn’t even notice I had new shoes on when I was running, so that was a definite bonus! Since the launch I have worn them for all of my half marathon training, including my 10 and 12 mile runs, with no blisters or rubbing at all and best of all my pace has improved by nearly a minute/mile. Is that because of the shoes, or my dedication to training? Possibly both, but either way, they are definitely the pair that I’ll be wearing to the start line in the hope of achieving my PB. The shoes are after all, endorsed by six-time Olympic gold medallist, Usain Bolt.
