Race report: Storm The Castle Duathlon - April 19, 2015

A new duathlon was unveiled to the UK multisport community on Sunday 19th April and has been getting glowing reviews from the lucky athletes to tackle Storm The Castle for the very first time.
Set in Shropshire and using Ludlow Castle as an imposing centrepiece athletes tackled a 10km run, 33km bike and 5km run. The hook with this event is that it features challenging run and bike courses, with the run in particular including a couple of brutal inclines.
The race is sold as the 'UK's Toughest Duathlon' and feedback so far seems to back that claim up. Athletes were forced to run the Lactic Ladder and The Wall a punishing three times and they get their names for very good reason. With a total of 195 athletes completing this race it shows signs of becoming a major fixture in the UK duathlon calendar and will attract a wide range of athletes that want to be able to call themselves a 'Stormtrooper'.
The men's race was won in commanding style by Alain Friedrich of Team Freespeed who showed class throughout and had nearly a five min lead when crossing the line. After finishing Alain commented it was "one of the toughest races I have ever done". The women's race was a much closer affair with Marianne Day of Worcestor Tri Club victorious, and only a few mins splitting the top three.
Race Director, Dermott Hayes, had this to say about the inaugural event "We have been blown away by the support of athletes entering an event that has no reputation, we want to create an event that offers something for all level of athlete and helps to put duathlon back on the map".
We understand planning has already started for 2016 and race entries will be much sought after. Keep an eye out for this new must do event.
