Steve Way confirmed for Edinburgh Marathon

Inspirational Commonwealth Games runner Steve Way has confirmed he will take part in this year’s Edinburgh Marathon Festival (EMF) by racing in the marathon event which take place on Sunday 31st May.

The 40-year-old Way captured the imagination of the nation this summer when he completed the journey from a heavy smoking takeaway-addict to Commonwealth Games hero.

In 2007, he weighed 16 and a half stone when he began running to get healthy. It led to selection for Team England at Glasgow 2014, where he placed 10th in the men’s marathon in a British age-group record of 2:15:16.

Life has changed drastically for Way over the past 5 years. “I’d normally be sat in eating takeaways.” He recalls of his previous routine, before making the life-changing decision which has also resulted in him earning Great Britain selection for the World 100K Championships.

Way is relishing the prospect of a fast & flat course in Scotland’s capital.

He said: “Having been hit by injury earlier in the year, I am pleased to be making good progress with my training and I hope to be in good shape by the end of May so that I can compete for a podium place in the marathon.”

He also very comfortable his new-found role model status. “My back story of being a smoker and overweight not so long ago strikes a chord with people.” He says. “I am also very transparent and honest with the training I do. You can read it all on my blog. People know where I have come from and what I have achieved and it touches them in some way.

“I'm really excited to be racing in my first Edinburgh Marathon. Scotland has very good memories for me as the last time I was there I was breaking the British Vet 40 marathon record at the Commonwealth Games in what was one of the best days of my life! The support and reception I received from the Scottish people last summer was fantastic so I'm hoping for more of the same when I return!”

Way is building towards his final challenge of the year at the World 100K Championships and he says the marathon will be a key part of his preparation.

“The Edinburgh Marathon will put me in a good position for the rest of the year as I then focus my attention towards the World 100km champs which is in September in the Netherlands.

Abi Beautyman, Elite Coordinator for the Edinburgh Marathon Festival said “It is great to see that The Edinburgh Marathon Festival not only attracts the best international athletes but also the best UK talent too. We are hopeful that Steve may even break the British record this year and give the international athletes a run for their money. It is great to welcome him to Edinburgh!”

All entries for the Edinburgh Marathon Festival close on Wednesday 6th May at 5pm, apart from full & half marathon entries which are already closed for entries.
