Race report: Affinion Discovery Run - Saturday May 30, 2015

On the morning of Saturday 30th May, over 1000 runners descended on the beautiful Petworth Park in West Sussex for the inaugural sell-out Affinion Discovery Run.

Enjoying the sunny weather, participants took part in the Discovery 5k, 10k, Half Marathon and Youth Run with 155 children taking part in the Kids Fun Run and over 80 runners taking part in a canicross run.

Gillian Marshall from Cranbrook Joggers who took part in the 10k commented on how much she enjoyed the event: “The route was spectacular and the scenery amazing.  Everything about the day was well organised and it was lovely to have cheery marshals – everything was covered. Where can I sign up for next year?”

Following the grand finish in front of Petworth House participants and spectators enjoyed a packed Sports Festival which included within the Sports Festival were stands from Balega, i-Run, Lucozade and Salming. Perfect Motion Physio and Rise Sports Therapy were on hand to relieve sore muscles and there was plenty of activity from Guildford International Volleyball Club, Stoolball England and Westgate Leisure plus catering and much more.

Event Director, Louise Cornish said: “Congratulations to everyone who took part in the event. It's been fantastic to see so many people enter, turn up and complete the event, and to see all the spectators here to support them, enjoy the day and Sports Festival. The stunning scenery throughout Petworth Park offered the perfect backdrop to the event and we look forward to returning in the future.”

Run247's occasional columnist Mike Clyne was working as the race commentator (#MikeontheMic!!) for the inaugural Affinion Discovery Run so we asked him for his views on the day.  Here is what he has added:

"Any race that has a great venue, a range of distances to suit everyone and a friendly family atmosphere is a pleasure to be around.  To have all of those for a first time event is even more impressive and the Affinion Discovery Run managed all of the above.

"I witnessed a large number of athletes running a distance for the first time, mixed in with more experienced athletes, with a stunning backdrop of Petworth House. To witness 200+ kids doing the fun run was great, seeing the Canicross races (running with dogs) was remarkable and watching the large number of spectators welcoming home not only their own athletes but many others was a great experience.

"Anyone wanting to run a glorious off road race should look to the Affinion Discovery Run for a great day out.  Bring your family and friends, encourage them to join in, bring a picnic and make a day of it!"
