Race news: Amba Hotels City of London Mile - London, Sunday, June 14, 2015

Lee Emanuel is the star draw among the British elite who will contest the 2015 Amba Hotels City of London Mile Races which take place in London on Sunday 14th June.

The appearance of Emanuel, who won the silver medal over 3000m at the European Indoor Championships in Prague in March, adds spice to a strong international men’s field which includes eight runners who have run under 4 minutes for the mile.

Emanuel has been preparing for the European track season from his training base in New Mexico and flies into the UK later this week ahead of his Diamond League race over 1500m in Birmingham on Sunday. He will then revert to the roads the following weekend and race over the mile on a fast course which starts and finishes outside St. Paul’s Cathedral. Emanuel has a PB for the mile of 3:54:30, set indoors at the New Balance Games in February 2014.

The international line-up is led by the young Brazilian Thiago André who finished 4th over 1500m at last year’s World Junior Championships. Eleven days ago André lowered his 1500m PB by more than four seconds when finishing 5th in a time of 3:35:90 at the FBK Games in Hengelo. Also in the field are Collis Birmingham of Australia, Julian Matthews of New Zealand and Kevin Batt of Ireland.

In addition to Emanuel, there is an impressive list of British talent on show including four of the top five British finishers (Chris Warburton, Dave Bishop, Andy Heyes and Tom Lancashire) in last year’s inaugural race. Adam Clarke, recent winner of the Westminster Mile, is also in the field, as are James Brewer, Frank Baddick, Anthony Whiteman and Jonny Hay.

The two favourites in the women’s race are Zoe Buckman of Australia, a 1500m finalist at the 2013 World Championships, and Amela Terzic of Serbia, who won a 1500m silver medal at the 2012 World Junior Championships in Barcelona. Buckman’s 1500m PB is 4:04:09, while Terzic’s stands at 4:05:69.

The British challenge is led by Gemma Kersey and Jemma Simpson who finished 4th and 7th respectively at the Westminster Mile.

The course records from last year’s first edition of these races are 4:04 by Ryan Gregson and 4:44 by Genevieve LaCaze.
