Sporting success for thousands of runners in the Asda Foundation Hull 10K

Race report: Asda Foundation Hull - 10K Sunday, June 14, 2015

The sixth Asda Foundation Hull 10K was hailed a huge success as thousands of runners took to the city’s streets raising vital funds for good causes across East Yorkshire.

There were great cheers as former Hull City striker Dean Windass and home-grown boxer Tommy Coyle helped get the race underway in the heart of the historic city centre, alongside the Lord Mayor, Councillor Anita Harrison.

The streets were filled with colour and noise with large, enthusiastic crowds offering the runners fantastic support as they made their way around the route, which started and finished outside the Guildhall in Alfred Gelder Street and took in the waterfront, marina, The Deep sea life visitor attraction and other Hull landmarks.

First across the finishing line was Alec Gibson in a time of 33 mins 31 secs. He was followed by Les Ball who took second spot in 33 mins 55 secs. David Sedgwick was third in 34 mins 21 secs.

Jo Maddick was the first woman in 36 mins 30 secs, finishing ahead of Catherine Jeremiah in second who clocked 38 mins 25 secs. Emma Yates took third place in 38 mins 32 secs.

New dad Tommy Coyle – who is preparing for a hotly-anticipated bout against fellow Hull boxer Luke Campbell – clocked an impressive finish time of 49 mins 51 secs, while Dean Windass finished a second ahead in 49 mins 50 secs. Also taking part was Miss Hull, Maryann Cunningham who achieved 1 hour 1 minute and 52 secs.

Among those also celebrating crossing the finishing line was 37-year-old Paul Halliday, of Kingwood, Hull, who took part in his first 10K after shedding 10 stones. Now tipping the scales at under 14 stones, he ran 1K for every stone he had lost to raise money for Candlelighters. Paul finished in a time of 53 mins 33 secs.

Almost 100 Asda Colleagues also pulled on their trainers to take part, while the field also included over 480 runners taking part in the KC Hull 10K Corporate Challenge, a record entry for the event in which businesses compete to be crowned the fastest firm in the race.

Julie Ward, Asda Foundation Manager, said: “The Hull event continues to go from strength and it is inspiring to see so many people taking on the challenge to support some excellent charities. All those involved – runners, spectators, volunteers and organisers – are to be congratulated for making the run such an enormous success.”

KC Community Coordinator Brendon Smurthwaite said: “We were delighted to be involved in what was a terrific day and it was great to see a record-breaking number of people taking part in the Corporate Challenge. It brings the business community together and allows them to have fun, network and support local and national charities. We’re looking forward to being part of it again in 2015.”

Run For All Event Lead Charlie Tatman said: “Thank you so much to everyone who was involved in today’s Hull 10K; from the runners to our supporters, from spectators to volunteers, they all made today’s event what it was. We hope everyone had a day to remember and that we’ll see you all again next year.”

Runners were able to run for fun or for a good cause of their choice. They were particularly encouraged to support one of the event’s partner charities: the Jane Tomlinson Appeal,  Hull and East Riding (HER) Breast Friends, CLIC Sargent, Candlelighters, Dove House Hospice, Echoes Foundation, Hull Children’s University, Macmillan Cancer Support, Martin House Children’s Hospice and Yorkshire Cancer Research.

The race is supported by Asda Foundation, Hull City Council, KC, MKM Building Supplies, Arco, Runner’s World, Hull Daily Mail, Viking FM, Run 247, Banana Kick and LTS.

Organised by Run For All, it forms part of the successful Asda Foundation 10K series that includes events in Lincoln, Burnley, Leeds and York as well as Hull.
