Race report: Maidenhead’s 26.2 Team Challenge - Sunday, June 14, 2015

Local families, colleagues, fundraisers and seasoned athletes laced up their trainers and took part in Maidenhead’s 26.2 Team Challenge on Sunday 14 June, hosted by local race organiser Purple Patch Running. From club runners looking to share that marathon feeling, to charity runners donning quirky fancy dress costumes, there was abundant enthusiasm for the relay race - and it did not disappoint.

Braywick Park was blessed with sunshine and the athletic track start line was alive with energy. First the children took to the track for the junior races, with tremendous roars from spectators. The cheers helped those aged under seven complete one 400 metre lap, and the older age groups of under nine and under twelve year olds complete two laps. Delighted with their finishers’ medals, the juniors left the track to make way for the adults.

Thirty four teams of up to ten runners took it in turns to run their allocated 2.62 mile lap, with some individuals completing two or three laps in total. One runner, Mark Travers from St Albans, decided to tackle the whole course by himself! Starting on the athletics track, the route led competitors along the outskirts of Braywick sports ground, along Green Lane to Stafferton Way, a short distance along the A308 and then into the athletic track finish line. Spectators treated every runner to a hero’s finish, before the baton was passed and the next relay runner went on their way.

Dressed all in yellow, Alison Cooksam from team ‘Lemon Drizzlers’ commented: “I was sat here with my team waiting to run my 2.62 leg, and we realised we’d already completed a half marathon – it’s such a great feeling knowing what you can achieve as part of a team. It’s been an amazing event and with cheers both out on the course and the track finish, it’s been brilliant fun!”

Steve Mullen and his team from Active Health won the ‘best fancy dress’ award last year, and not wanting to disappoint, his team ran Sunday’s challenge dressed as popular Disney characters. Thanks to their effort, the team remain champions. He said: “Last year was so much fun that we made sure we got a team together for this year’s event. As well as raising money for the Alexander Devine Charity, I hope our costumes have provided humour for others taking part. We certainly had a few double takes from dog walkers whilst we were out on the course!”

The overall winners of the 26.2 Team Challenge were Cookham Running Club, completing the marathon distance in 2 hours and 53 minutes.  On hearing of their win, team runner Louise Ferriman commented: “We didn’t enter today expecting to come first so we’re all ecstatic! It was a great opportunity for us as a club to have young and old working together to achieve that end goal and the atmosphere has been amazing. We often compete in 5k races but this is something so new to us, I’ve not seen anything like it before. We’ll definitely be bringing more teams back next year!”

Chris Donald, Race Director, describes the event as a huge success: “I’d like to say a massive congratulations to each and every runner that took part in the 26.2 Team Challenge. Every year we are bowled over by the team spirit and dedication to this event - the sight of runners, young and old, competing together is truly inspiring. I’d like to add a special thanks to the spectators who helped make it such a special atmosphere.”
