Langholm Trail Half Marathon & 10k and Muckle 5k

Langholm’s third Muckle Toon Adventure Festival (MTAF) took place over the weekend (19-21st June) attracting record participants and spectators.
An action packed schedule on Saturday saw both mountain bike and run participants descend on the festival. Record numbers of 10k and half marathon competitors were cheered on by crowds of locals lining the route and the winners were presented with prizes by the Drop and Roll Tour team.
The headline attraction on Saturday was Danny MacAskill’s Drop and Roll Tour over 1000 spectators gathered at Basecamp , at Langholm Rugby Football Club, to witness the world famous bike trials team perform a variety of spectacular stunts. The amazing spectacle was followed up with an evening with Danny himself at the Buccleuch Centre. The relaxed interview and Q&A session, hosted by MTAF Directors Dawn Lamb and Dwayne Bell, shone an intriguing spotlight onto the rapid rise to worldwide fame MacAskill has experienced and insight into his many film projects.
Sunday at MTAF is billed as family day and certainly did not disappoint Over 300 riders set off on the 30, 60 and 90 mile sportif in the morning before the inaugural 5k run at 11am. A new addition to the schedule, the 5k, was an overwhelming success with over 120 runners including many children completing the 3mile loop. Archery, geocache adventure, mountain bike skills, hill navigation workshops and guided walks attracted all age groups.

Salomon Trail Marathon Wales

Top class competition and worthy champions were the order of the day at the 4th edition of the Salomon Trail Marathon Wales last weekend, but it was the almost 1000 participants who were the real winners as large crowds flocked to Coed y Brenin Forest Park, in North Wales. The enjoyment factor of this event was raised yet another notch this year as the enthusiasm of the runners flowed, in overcast, damp conditions early in the day.
The visitor centres at Coed y Brenin Forest Park were once again transformed into an exciting race arena with a festival feel, and yet again the resounding feedback from runners and spectators alike was highly positive. In 4 years Trail Marathon Wales has grown to be one of the UK's premium trail marathons with runners traveling from as far a field as the US, Germany, Spain, Sweden and Ireland, and it is easy to see why the race, which take in some of the most technical and beautiful aspects of this 9000 acres forest in the heart of the Snowdonia National Park, has cemented itself as one of the top events on the UK trail running calendar.
As racing got underway at the traditional 9.00am, the mist clung to the tree tops for the first hour or so of the event and the atmosphere was a large contrast to the hot and sunny conditions of the race 12 months earlier. 2013 winner and 2014 runner-up Andrew Siggers was prominent, along with south Wales athlete Harry Jones and local Aberystwyth runner Ken Caulkett. Both Kaulkett and Jones were also familiar with the Coed y Brenin trails - Jones as the runner-up at the 2015 Winter Trail race and Kaulkett as the winner of the recent Goldrush Trail race.
After keeping close order for the first half of the race, Jones followed Siggers through 13 miles, with the Kenilworth runner around one minute to the good as they passed under the race arena at halfway. However, as the relentless miles of the second half of the race wore on it was apparent that Siggers' strength and course knowledge was unbeatable, and the 35-year old crossed the line in 3:01:46 for a famous second win at this event, over nine minutes ahead of Jones (3:10:02) by the finish line. Caulkett ran a strong race to take third in 3:12:58.
In the women's event 2014 winner Eryri Harrier and Welsh international Andrea Rowlands was back after a record breaking run at the Welsh 1000m race a couple of weeks earlier, and led early on from TMW newcomer Samantha Amend race regular Mary Grace Spalton. As the first half wore on it was clear that Amend meant business though, edging past Rowlands, and by halfway had a 2 minute lead on Andrea.
With the two locked in battle is was fascinating that over the ensuing second half they remained at a steady gap, showing the strength of the two runners. Amend, a seasoned road runner, extended her lead to just over 3 minutes as she rounded the last bend and headed up to the finish line to take the applause, victory and her first Trail Marathon Wales ladies' title. Rowlands finished well to take second, with Mary Grace adding third to her win of 2013 and second place last year.
In the supporting half marathon event, TMW favourite and winner of the 2012 marathon and 2013 half marathon, Andy Davies was back. The Mercia fell runner has been in sparkling form in the last 12 months, with cross country victories over Olympic champion Ali Brownlee amongst his performances, and as the race rolled out at 10.00am Davies took up the lead immediately. He was followed by training partner Jon Bowie, who himself has been in great form, and as they covered the first 3 miles in record time, it was only Bowie who could match Davies. However, as the race wore on Davies opened a gap and extended it as the miles elapsed, coming home in a new course record 1:21:41 over two minutes clear of Bowie (1:23:49). Calder Valley runner Jason Williams completed the podium in 1:26:11.
Shrewsbury triathlete Zoe McLennan was back at the race and looking ready for a repeat of her 2104 win. Also toeing the start line were seasoned performer Lisa Grantham and relative unknown Rachael Parker. Though McLennan improved on her winning time of 2014 by almost three minutes, her 1:46:32 was only good enough for second in 2015 as Parker romped around the 13-mile route in a very swift 1:44:50, easily taking the win and one of the coveted Trail Marathon Wales 'way marker' trophies which each winner of the half and full marathon races receives. Grantham ran strongly for third in 1:50:17.
The 2016 Trail Marathon Wales event will take place on Saturday 18th June.

1485 GoTri Duathlon

This was the first GoTri Duathlon 1485 Tri Club had put on. The event was held at Market Bosworth’s Sports Ground the new home of 1485 Tri Club. 33 athletes took part in the event. The event distances were a 2.5km run, a 11km cycle followed by a 1km run.
The first run was one lap around the sports ground then it progressed along the scenic Ashby canal before retuning down a quiet country lane back to the sports ground to transition. The cycle route was a single lap on the roads which took the riders through the historic town of Market Bosworth before returning again to the sports ground to the transition area, athletes then completed two laps of the sports ground before crossing the finish line.
A large proportion of participants had never done a multi-sport event before, while others were more experienced and used the event as a training session. So there was a mixture of bikes in transition, from ordinary mountain bikes to full carbon Time Trial machines.
All the athletes who took part did so in the manner expected of such a low key starter event and everyone who finished said how enjoyable it was and what a great atmosphere 1485 Tri Club had created at the venue.
The comments on Facebook have all backed the athletes’ comments up and 1485 tri club will be putting another GoTri Duathlon on soon at the same venue and the same routes will be used.
At the finish there were soft drinks and teas, coffees and biscuits for athletes. The money raised from the event will go to 1485 Tri Club to help pay for the clubs winter swimming sessions in the pool, and some will go to the Sports Club to help support the venue and towards the new £400,000 club house. The building of should start in July and hopefully be completed for January 2016.
1485 Tri Club are putting on two Aquathlons, the first of which is on the evening of Wednesday, July 8 and the second on the evening of Wednesday. August 5; both starting at 7pm.
The distances for the Aquathlon events will be a 300mtr open water swim followed by a 4km run, these events will be at the Market Bosworth Water Trust. Again these are aimed at those 15 years old and above wanting to try a multi-sport event for the 1st time and those more experienced who may want to use it as a training session.

Cary Canter 10k

Over 120 runners turned out to Caryford Fitness and Leisure to take part in the 5th Cary 10k. Conditions for runners were almost perfect overcast with a cool breeze. Due to the recent warm weather the usually damp off road parts of the route had dried up, to leave the ideal course for first time runners.
Real mix of winners for the local running clubs with Well City Harriers Kieran Young taking the title. Leading from start to finish Kieran completed the course in an impressive 41m 11s, with Ben Tull from Taunton Athletics club coming in 25 seconds later at a time of 41m 47s.
There was some great support at the finish line for runners. Many youngsters were inspired by their parents to take part in the 1km fun run. Over 25 children took on the challenge of the 1km fun run, with each one receiving a certificate for their efforts.

Men's 10k Glasgow

Thousands of men created a positive impact of their health and wellbeing by taking to the streets of Glasgow for the 10th anniversary edition of the Men’s 10K on Father's’ Day. The event again acted as a perfect catalyst for addressing the issues of men’s health and wellbeing. The participants have also raised over £64,000 for a variety of good causes.
The 10K race was officially started by Maurice Donohue, Get Active Programme Manager for the Scottish Association for Mental Health, in recognition of his outstanding work with SAMH. He pressed the starter horn at 10am and then joined his running group to complete the route with his friends. A slight drizzle of rain did not put off thousands of supporters who lined the route which set off from the Riverside Transport Museum along the River Clyde, over the Kingston bridge, through the City Centre to the finish at Glasgow Green.
While every man that made it to the start line achieved a personal win just by getting there, the race was won by Robert Gilroy from Hamilton in a time of 31 minutes and 50 seconds, second was Colin Thomas from Mount Florida in 33 minutes and 48 seconds with Iain Reid from Giffnock completing the top three in 34 minutes and 7 seconds.
Behind the lead runners, there were countless stories from ordinary men doing extraordinary things. Paul O’Donnell of Yorkhill was taking part in his seventh Men’s 10K event. So far he has raised over £1000 for Yorkhill Hospital and The Beatson Centre.
Vinny Ferguson of Lennoxtown, Glasgow was completing his 12th race in 12 months. He was matching a challenge his sister Lisa bravely took on in response to being diagnosed with fibromyalgia, a chronic pain condition.
William Robertson of Glasgow, who used to be 21 stone in weight and was diagnosed with schizoaffectionate disorder, believes that running and in particular, the Men’s 10K event, has changed his life for the better. He is now nine stone lighter and a vegan ultra runner.
For those who want to do it all again or who missed out on Glasgow, there is still another chance to join the fun when Edinburgh hosts a Men’s 10k for the first time ever later this year in another unique city centre event.
Edinburgh will host the event on Sunday 1 November just ahead of International Men’s Day with a route that begins on the Royal Mile and finishes at Murrayfield Stadium.

Sport in the Port 10k & 5k

Photo: The start of the 10k
The streets of Ellesmere Port saw a record turnout of over 1,800 athletes participating in Sport in the Port 2015 on Father’s Day in a suite of three running events based in the centre of the town.
In near perfect running conditions, the 10K saw Taurus Elly open up a commanding lead early on in the race to finish first in 31:59, virtually a minute ahead of Martin Swensson of Penny Lane Striders who crossed the line in 32:58 with Lee Jones of Deeside AC third in 33:12.
The Ladies’ race produced a new course record with Faye Fullerton of Havering Mayesbrook AC coming in first lady in 33:58 followed by Kelly Crickmore of Stockport Harriers, yet again on the podium in second place (36:25) and Diane McVey of Wilmslow RC third (37:42).
The 5K saw an exciting sprint finish to the line to be won by David Brockway of Wirral AC in 16:51 with Dale Higham of Penny Lane Striders second in 16:55 and Robert Weston third in 16:56.
Carol Parsons broke the course record by over a minute to win the ladies race in 18:42 with Nicole Roberts second in 19:27 and Lisa Gawthorne of Liverpool Pembroke & Sefton Harriers third in 20:08.
“It was fantastic to see so many local people participating in the event,” said Andy White from the organising team who are responsible for the ever popular Chester Half Marathon and MBNA Chester Marathon. “For many people it was their first race and the fun run gave a chance for everyone to take part. Also on Father’s Day we had many sons and daughters with their dads or granddads across the three events. This is what Sport in the Port is all about!”
“We have been amazed by the response to this event and the way the people of Ellesmere Port have taken it to their heart,” said Joint race organiser and Great Sutton resident Chris Hulse. “It was fantastic to see the Civic Square bustling with so many people and then the athletes streaming down Civic Way!”
“We have to give big thanks to URENCO and the other sponsors and the volunteers who helped us make today happen as without their hard work and enthusiastic support the event would not have been able to take place. The volunteers included many local residents, event sponsors and groups including Ellesmere Port Running Club, the Youth Federation, Ellesmere Port ATC and youth groups from the Churches in Ellesmere Port. A big thank you to all of them!"

The Sutton Beast: Tony Robinson 10K

160 entrants started the 14th running of this Fenland Multi Terrain Race. Sutton in The Isle, Cambridgeshire sits on the edge of the Isle of Ely so, unusually for this part of the country, the race includes a hill as the runners drop of the edge of the isle after 1k, only to return up it after 9k. In between they cross fenland droves and compete with the conditions that prevail on the flatter and more exposed part of the course. This year, to keep them going at mid distance, they were guided along by a ‘rock drummer’ playing a rhythm and making encouraging noises!
In a fast race, the first male home was Kieran Drane in 36 mins 51 secs and the first female was Sian Marie Lucas in a record time of 41mins 17seconds.
The whole event was very well supported with 240 competitors taking part in the Mini Beast Fun Run beforehand. Energie Fitness for Women provided a hugely popular aerobic warm up and The Beast himself was on hand to chase the runners out and see them all home.
Guests from Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust were present as this year some of the proceeds will go to support them. The runners and families were entertained by Jacen Bruce and The Memphis Underground and the whole show was hosted by Donovan Blake of ITV Anglia News. A fantastic event all round and we are already making plans for 2016
