Halewood 5k
It had been very warm all week but on Saturday the rain came for this the 62nd running of this free monthly race. Right on cue though the rain stopped before the race start time and it was dry. The conditions were very humid though.
Runners were grateful for the slight breeze during the race and were looking for shade from the trees that border the Transpennine trail that the course runs on. Anyone who got anywhere near their best course time did very well on Saturday.
There was a good mixture of unattached and club runners present with several clubs represented and also a lot of first timers trying out the course.
The small field runners included participants from an almost complete set of age categories – U20, senior, V35, V40, V45, V50, V55, V60, V65, V70 right through to V75 testing themselves out against the fast 5k course.
First home was Penny Lane Striders’ Martin Swenson . Never outside the top three, this was Martin’s third win at the event, coming home in an excellent time of 16:10. Martin was followed home by the Liverpool Harriers duo of James Riley and Andy McQue in very good times of 17:05 and 17:17.
First lady home was Liverpool Pembroke Sefton’s Kirsty Longley taking her second win from three races here. Kirsty ran an excellent time of 18:03 which gave her the second fastest time by a FV35 ever over the course. Second home was Clare Constable from the same club in a very good time in the conditions of 19:21. Third lady home was Charlotte Wilson-Dewhurst of Liverpool Harriers in another very good time of 19:35.
As a race within a race we look at the performances over the year of the different clubs and unattached runners. Honours on the day in the ladies race went to Liverpool Harriers. Over the year so far heading it up is Knowsley Harriers followed by the virtual team of unattached runners. Honours on the day in the men’s went to the virtual team of unattached runners and over the year so far they are narrowly trailing the host club Knowsley Harriers.
In the individuals over the year so far the top three ladies are Gill Collen from Warrington Road Runners, Michelle Kelly of Penny Lane Striders and Tracey Carr of Knowsey Haririers.
The top three males over the year to date are unattached Ashley Crawford, Liverpool Pembroke Sefton’s Robbie Wood and Paul Demore of St Helens Striders.
A big thank you has to go out to the marshals who attended on the day. The club Knowsley Harriers AC had also put on a 4 mile race on the Thursday evening and there were 2 shouts out for marshals this week.

Buscot Run – 5k & 10k
The annual Buscot Run organised by Faringdon Rotary took place in the beautiful setting of Buscot Park whilst the park was closed by kind permission of Lord Faringdon.
The 5k and 10k the courses run right past the front door of Buscot House, through formal parkland, woods and around open fields on a mix of gravel and tarmac.
A sunny and warm morning saw 47 runners in the 5k including young children running with mums and dads and a field of over 81 in the 10k.

Caistor 10k – ‘Ye Olde Sting’

Caistor Running Club held the fourth running of its 10k race on Sunday 5th July 2015. The race was called ‘Ye Olde Sting’ as it coincided with the ‘Caistor Goes Medieval’ event. The main race sponsor was East Trans.
Entries prior to race day were received from 290 runners, another 54 runners signed up on the day, with 303 finishing the tough course. There were many local runners taking part as well regional club runners. In what was a superb effort, Nick Martin, a member of Caistor Running Club, won the men’s event in a new course record time of 33:40. The ladies’ race was won for the second year in a row by former 2012 champion Beverley Wilson of Cleethorpes AC, in 40:47.
The weather was cloudy and warm for the start in the historic centre of Caistor and many runners found the going tough. The course took the runners out on the North Kelsey Road and into the woodland around Nettleton Park., before returning to Caistor on Moortown Road and the A46 bypass. The superb public support for all of the route was greatly appreciated by the runners. The final two kilometres were around Caistor’s historic areas, with short but tough ascents of Castle Hill, Cromwell View and Plough Hill to the finish line in the Market Place, where a noisy and supportive crowd had gathered.
The male U18's winner was Jordan Carlile of Cleethorpes AC in 41:37. The female U18's winner was Natalie Graham of Scunthorpe & District AC in 53:44. The men’s team race was won by Caistor RC (Nick Martin, Mike Wells and Tom Bell) and the women’s team race was won for the first time by Cleethorpes AC (Beverley Wilson, Sarah Edwards and Sarah McFadzean).
Feedback from both participants and spectators on the day was very positive and many messages of support and congratulations have been received by members of Caistor RC.

Croydon Ultra

On a rainy morning the 5th Croydon Ultra 30 mile race took place. The course is twice round a 15mile loop on a mixed terrain route that presents a challenge to the unprepared with around 2,700ft of climbing.
A lead pack of four including reigning champion and course record holder David Ross took the first 15 miles at a super fast pace pushing each other and going at somewhere 6.15 minute miles. But this early pace was too quick and only Ross and Kristian Morgan were able to sustain it on the second loop.
As the rain cleared and the sun came out Ross was clearly on a mission to break his own course record and he set about upping the pace in the latter stages, eventually arriving at the finish in a new course record of 3:43 [CR 2014 - 3:48] and 11 minutes ahead of second placed Morgan, who outsprinted a late charging Felix Allen by literally seconds behind.
The ladies race was won by Daisy Rolfe in 5:02 with second placed Sophie Shaw finished in 6:06.

Fairy Freckled Cow Trail race
Denbigh Harriers organised the highly successful North Wales Trail Race Championships at their annual Fairy Freckled Cow Trail race around the Alwen Reservoir on Sunday.
In changeable weather the course record was broken on this 11KM undulating course by teenager John Spill from Eryri Harriers. He won the race in 38.33 breaking the pervious record by 19 seconds a truly magnificent performance perhaps helped by a cooling heavy rain shower half way round the course.
Lee Jones from Deeside was second followed by Denbigh’s John Morris in third.
The ladies' race was won by Tracey Llewelyn from Cybi Striders in 49.25 closely followed by Anest Muller from West Cheshire AC. Carolyn Stamper-Clark from Delamere Spartans took the third lady spot.
Denbigh Harriers were out in force organising and participating in the event with 28 members and 7 volunteers. This event is recognised by runners far and wide as a excellently organised race in a beautiful setting. The race will next be held on Sunday 3rd July 2016 and its sister race around the Brenig Reservoir is being held on Saturday5th September 2015.

Manchester Color Run
Nearly 10,000 happy ‘Color Runners’ headed to Manchester’s Etihad Campus this weekend when the Happiest 5k on the planet returned to the city for the third time.
Starting as a blank canvas and finishing head-to-toe in every colour of the rainbow, fun-loving runners from across the city and beyond took part in the ‘Happiest 5k on the Planet’ today. Following a course that meandered round Manchester’s Etihad Campus, participants were covered in coloured powder at every kilometre before making their way across the finish line and into the Festival Finish.
In celebration of their efforts, ‘Color Runners’ then partied in true Mancunian style, filling the skies with vibrant multicolour as Capital DJs pumped awesome live music from the stage.
Driving the concept of the untimed 5k, The Color Run™ is about enjoying a day of fitness and fun, with the aim for participants to cross the finish line with smiles on their faces. The day saw participants jog, walk, skip and dance their way around the route with friends, family and colleagues.
James Robinson, MD of the event organisers, said: “Manchester never disappoints, we always have so much fun here because everyone truly embraces what The Color Run is all about: healthiness, fun, friendship and a celebration of happiness.”

Stonehaven Half Marathon

Weather wise we couldn’t have had a better day; sunny and warm but not as hot as last year and very little breeze – this helped to swell our spectator numbers.
There had been torrential rain most of Saturday and there were a few big puddles when the organisers started to put the course up but most had disappeared before the runners set off.
474 runners had registered but only a field of 370 set off at 10am (an hour earlier than in previous years).
This was the 30th running of the event and probably the last one on this particular course (due to safety issues running it on one of the roads) but it certainly proved to be one of the best ever!
Ron Gauld (Stonehaven Running Club) led the field from the start and was first finisher in a time of 1:18:09, very closely followed by Kenny O’neill in a time of 1:8:43. Michael Fullerton was the third male in a time of 1:20:47.
First female was Carolyn Mcleod in a time of 1:26:22, second place was Marie Baxter (1:28:45 ) and third Moira Davie (1:28:45).

Stortford 10
Bishop’s Stortford Running Club hosted their annual ‘Stortford 10’, a 10 mile multi-terrain race that regularly attracts runners from far and wide and this year was no exception.
Unusually for July, the race started in light rain, however by the time the winner arrived back in an impressive time of 59:21 the rain had cleared and the runners and spectators were able to enjoy a fine summer afternoon.
The winner of the men’s race, Alan Bogle is member of Northern Ireland’s City of Derry Athletic Club and the winner of the women’s race, Wendy Webster who finished in 01:05:51, is from a little closer to home, St. Albans. The men’s and women’s team events were won by Harlow and Bishop’s Stortford respectively.

The largest team in the race was a group from the Masowe eChishanu (UK) (http://www.masoweechishanu.org.uk) church who chose the Stortford 10 as an opportunity to raise money for orphans’ education and school building in their native Zimbabwe. The group, whose members arrived in Stortford from all over the UK on the day not only provided runners but stayed all day offering enthusiastic and vocal support to all runners competing in the Stortford 10 and the afternoon’s Schools Charity Fun Runs.

Tadley 10k and 3k
Now in its 21st year the Tadley 10K has grown from its modest beginnings of fewer than 100 finishers in 1995, to over 292 runners for this year's event. The course is a single loop of 10 kilometres over quiet, pretty country lanes on the Hampshire – Berkshire borders. Conditions were warm but wind-free. Toby Lambert (Winchester) took the lead from the start and by 2k already had a lead of 100 metres. He finished in an impressive 32.05, around a minute and a half ahead of 2nd place Matthew King (Unattached). Peter Watkeys (Basingstoke & Mid Hants) came third in a time of 36.46. The male age category winners were Matt Shaylor (Basingstoke & Mid Hants) for M40 in 37.22, Mark Slaney (Basingstoke & Mid Hants) for M50 in 40.05, and Tim Hughes (White Horse Harriers) for M60 in 37.66.
As for the ladies, Lisa Gottwald (Chineham Park RC) crossed the line in 42.51, followed by Anna Brook (Jedwood Runners) in 43.36. Kate Robson (Basingstoke & Mid Hants) came third in 43.53. The female age category winners were Caroline Partner (Basingstoke & Mid Hants) for F35 in 46.08, Clare Pussey (Unattached) for F45 in 45.38, and Nicola Dale (Unattached) for F55 in 53.09. The Mixed Team Prize was awarded to Chineham Park RC.
The 3k Fun Run, with its new off-road course, was enjoyed by a record 45 runners (37 children and 8 adults) The overall winner and first boy to finish was Joseph Gardner, aged 13, who finished in 13.27. First girl was Eve Brown, aged 8, who achieved a time of 16.25.
