Windsor Half Marathon - Sunday, September 27, 2015

The Windsor Half Marathon took place in Windsor Great Park for the 33rd time yesterday, Sunday 27th September. 4,000 runners crossed the finish line on The Long Walk and record numbers of spectators had made their way to the park to cheer on the runners and enjoy the buzz of the race day atmosphere.

The race was officially started by the Mayor of Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead Councillor Eileen Quick.

Kojo Kyereme and Samantha Amend had come to Windsor to win and they both put in a strong performance to claim the top spots on the podium in a quality field. Kojo Kyereme, winner in 2013 and newly crowned Masters (over 40) World Track 10k Champion 2015, took the lead straight from the start and kept extending the gap to finish in 1:07:50. Toby Lambert of Winchester and District AC came second in 1:12:08 and Alexander Miller of Datchet Dashers, winner in 2012, secured third place in 1:13:21.

Samantha Amend of Belgrave Harriers retains the women’s title after finishing in 1:22:27. Runner up Lesley Locks of Hart Road Runners could not close the gap and claimed second place in 1:23:09, whilst Hannah Worthington crossed the finish line in 1:24:37.

The race saw a record number of charity runners taking part, with over 300 runners alone raising funds for Platinum Charity Weekend Partner CLIC Sargent. Other Official Charity Weekend Partners included Cancer Research UK (Gold Charity Weekend Partner), Help for Heroes (Silver Charity Weekend Partner), as well as Bloodwise and The National Brain Appeal (Bronze Charity Weekend Partners). Alzheimer’s Society, Childlife, CRY, Daisy’s Dream and Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation were Copper Charity Weekend Partners.

The Windsor Half Marathon is a sell out race and recognised as one of the most iconic and prestigious events on the British running calendar, attracting runners from all over the world. Boasting one of the most picturesque courses in the world, the Windsor Half Marathon is set in stunning surroundings and features amazing views of Windsor Castle and across Windsor Great Park.

The Sprite Sprint saw fifty-nine five to nine year olds run 40m, and Tom Ralton (U17, 11:22) and Fiona Steer (U13, 13:17) won the 2.5 mile Glynn Shefford Memorial Run which is aimed at runners aged ten and above.

Race Director Peter Hier commented: “We are proud to have delivered another excellent event in Windsor Great Park. We saw a real mix of club runners, international runners, charity runners and first time half marathon runners on the start line and we have received great feedback from runners and spectators alike. Congratulations to everybody who ran the Windsor Half Marathon 2015.

“I would also like to express a big thank you to everyone who continues to support the original Windsor Half Marathon, including our sponsors, marshals, volunteers, St John Ambulance and the official charities.”

Lewis Hay, Running Events Fundraising Manager for CLIC Sargent, said: “CLIC Sargent were delighted to have our biggest ever team taking part in this year’s Windsor Half Marathon and would like to say a huge thank you to all of the wonderful runners and volunteers who came along this weekend to support CLIC Sargent.

“It’s great to be part of this fantastic event and we are hopeful that our team of runners will raise an incredible £100,000 which will help us continue and expand our work in supporting children and young people with cancer, and their families. We are now looking forward to the 2016 Windsor Running Festival and can’t wait to welcome lots of new runners to our team!”

Sponsors of the Windsor Half Marathon 2015 included Knauf, ASICS, Alton Sports, Xempo Race Pacing, Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, everydayhero, Macdonald Windsor Hotel, Saka and Mars Chocolate UK.
