Thousands of runners hit the historic streets of York today for the third running of the Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon.

Crowds of enthusiastic spectators helped create a fantastic atmosphere as they cheered the runners around the scenic course.

Waved off by a start party that included teacher Matthew Burton from Channel 4’s Educating Yorkshire and BBC Look North’s Harry Gration, the field set off from the University of York, made its way into the city centre passing landmarks including the Minster and then headed out to Stamford Bridge before returning to the University.

First across the finish line was Edwin Korir in a time of 2:15:06. It was the second victory in three years for the Kenyan, although he failed to topple his course record of 2:13:31 set in the marathon’s inaugural year in 2013.

Nathan Kilcourse clocked 2:24:35 to come in second and Jackson Biwott was third in 2:31:01. First woman home was Joasia Zakrzewski in 2:48:48, followed by Rose Nicholson in 2:49:53 with Tori Green taking third place in 2:50:32. First male wheelchair athlete to finish was Bret Crossley in a time of 1:48:30.

Entrants were aged between 18 and 77 and came from across the UK and abroad, cementing the sell-out Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon’s reputation as a key event on the county’s sporting calendar.

This year they were joined by around 2,000 runners taking part in the first Plusnet Yorkshire 10 Mile run. Starting just after the marathon, it provided participants with an opportunity to experience the excitement, colour, enthusiastic crowds and vibrant atmosphere of marathon race day while tackling a more manageable 10 miles.

The race was won by Mike Burrett in a time of 53:54. Joe Sagar crossed the line in 55:22 to take second place and Joshua Schofield finished third in 57:24. First woman was Roslyn Holmes who finished in 1:04:02 ahead of second-placed Sue Phillips who clocked 1:07:07, with Michelle Dorrington third in 1:07:30.

A record 120 teams entered the Northern Gas Networks Yorkshire Marathon Corporate Relay, in which companies, sports clubs, groups of friends and other organisations competed for the title of “fastest firm in the race.”

The majority of runners tackled the 26.2 miles to raise money for one of the event’s partner charities – Jane Tomlinson Appeal, Martin House Children’s Hospice, Candlelighters, St Leonard’s Hospice, CLIC Sargent, Yorkshire Cancer Research, Macmillan Cancer Support, The Haven, Sue Ryder and Parkinson’s UK – or a good cause of their own choice.

Charlie Tatman, event director, said: “We are enormously grateful to everyone – runners, spectators, volunteers and sponsors – who helped make today’s event such a fantastic success. The new Plusnet Yorkshire 10 Mile was a great addition to the day and seemed to be very much enjoyed by all those who took part.”

Andy Baker, Plusnet CEO, said: ““We’re delighted that Plusnet has been the headline sponsor of this amazing event for the third year. Huge congratulations to all the runners for their efforts and a special thanks to the hundreds of spectators who turned out in force to show their support – you did us proud!”

David Gill, Northern Gas Network’s Director of Stakeholder Relations, said: “To see a record number of teams take part in this year’s Northern Gas Networks Yorkshire Marathon Corporate Challenge was fantastic. The event is an important part of the marathon day programme and it clearly going from strength to strength.”

Lord Mayor of York, Councillor Sonja Crisp, said: “It was fantastic to see so many runners taking part in the third Yorkshire Marathon; many of them achieving a long-held ambition while also raising hundreds of thousands of pounds for charity. The marathon always brings an incredible spectacle to the streets of York and beyond and this year's was no different - what a great showcase for the region. Well done to everyone who took part, volunteered or helped in the organisation.”

Runners will be able to re-live their marathon experience when Channel 4 broadcasts a programme about the event on Sunday 25th October.

Next year’s Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon takes place on Sunday October 9th and to be in with the best possible chance of securing a place join the priority pre-sale list which is now open.
