Over 500 fundraisers and seasoned athletes laced up their trainers to take part in the Water of Life 10km and Half Marathon on Sunday 25 October, hosted by Race Organiser Purple Patch Running. The event has raised over £500,000 in the last seven years for Diageo's Water of Life programme, funding WaterAid projects in Africa.

Starting and finishing at Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre, the race village atmosphere was great fun. WaterAid mascots and energetic African Drummers helped motivate runners before the half marathon set off at 10am, followed by the 10km runners at 10.15am. The scenic routes followed the River Thames between Marlow and Henley incorporating beautiful countryside and runners were blessed with sunshine. Even the juniors got a chance to shine with an 800m race rewarding youngsters with a t-shirt and medal.

The event boasted a magnificent spectator-friendly start and finish by the river, with supporters cheering each individual runner. First across the line was James Silvey completing the 10km distance in a remarkable time of 35 minutes 19 seconds. The first female in the 10km was Joanne Johnson, who was running for the Royal Air Force Triathlon Association and finished in a time of 43 minutes, 14 seconds.

Less than an hour later, Pedro Upton of Bracknell Forest Runners powered across the line to complete the half marathon in 1 hour 18 minutes. First female half marathon finisher was Melissah Gibson, with a fantastic time of 1 hour 28 minutes. Lord Leigh of Hurley showed his continued support for WaterAid by taking part and finished the half marathon in 1 hour 55 minutes. The oldest runner on the day was 80 year old Trevor Hart from London, crossing the line in an inspiring time of 2 hours 23 minutes.

The Siddons’ from Maidenhead came out on top as the most successful family on the day, with three generations taking part in the event. Running for Maidenhead Athletics Club, Pauline Siddons won the 10km over 60s category in 56 minutes 56 seconds. Pauline’s son Craig also took first place in his age category for the 10km, with a time of 40 minutes 28 seconds. Not to be outdone, Craig’s daughters Chloe and Ella came second in their respective age groups for the junior race.

Chris Donald, Race Director, describes the event as a huge success: “The atmosphere here today has been brilliant and I’m so glad the sun made an appearance to provide perfect weather conditions. The African Drummers delivered superb motivation out on the course and we’ve had extremely positive feedback from runners and spectators alike. I’d like to say a massive congratulations to each and every person who took part and a massive thank you for the money they have raised for WaterAid.”
