Grand Union Canal Half Marathon - Sunday, November 8, 2015

More than 600 runners laced up their trainers to take part in the Grand Union Canal Half Marathon on Sunday 8 November, hosted by Race Organiser Purple Patch Running. The 13.1 mile course offered runners a flat, multi-terrain experience as well as a magnificent spectator-friendly start at Cowley Recreation Ground and finish at Cassiobury Park.

Racing along the picturesque half marathon route from Uxbridge to Watford, canal barges, swans and plenty of mud made sure runners were entertained!  First across the line was Gary Towers, completing the distance in a remarkable time of 1 hour 16 minutes. The first female was Emily Antcliffe, who was running for Harrow Athletic Club and finished in a time of 1 hour 28 minutes. Both were awarded with a Purple Patch Running trophy, as well as free pair of Newton trainers from race sponsor Newton Running.

Also taking part were three sisters from Bisham, who completed the race in memory of their mum Sally who they sadly lost to breast cancer 11 years ago aged just 43. The Grand Union Canal marked the Philp sisters’ 22nd race out of their target 43 to raise money for Macmillan and Breast Cancer Care.

Chris Donald, Race Director, comments: “We were honored to have Abi, Lulu and Sophie Philp run our race as part of their challenge, they’re truly inspirational. I’m glad we could help them raise yet more funds for such a great cause.”

“The whole race day atmosphere at this year’s event was brilliant and the muddy towpath added to the fun! This half marathon provides fantastic scenery and we’re so glad to hear feedback that the picturesque route helped keep runners motivated out on the course. I’d like to say a massive congratulations to each and every person who took part and we look forward to welcoming you all back again next year.”
