NEWS from Orkney’s William Sichel

Orkney-based ultra marathon runner, William Sichel (62) has now confirmed that when competing at the Bislett Indoor International Endurance Festival 48 Hour race in Oslo last month he set 21 new age-group records, including the World M60 Record for completing 315.565km in 48 hours indoors.

This means that he has now exceeded the total of 165 records targeted in his Project165, almost three years ahead of schedule.

Project165 involved William attempting to set 165 ultra running records at World, British and Scottish level, including age groups, in officially recognised races before William’s 65th birthday on October 1st 2018.

“When I conceived this project obviously I had absolutely no idea how I would get on and a series of ‘bad’ races would have meant that I would certainly have needed all of those 5 years that I planned.”

Successfully completing the 3100 Mile race in New York – the World’s Longest Certified Footrace – in August last year was a mammoth step towards achieving the Project as 54 records were earned there.

William hopes that the current records he has set, which are all meticulously documented on his web site, will all be broken and will act as goals, motivation and incentives to the current and future generations of runners.

William says there is no end to his record setting exploits and he will announce another, more ambitious project, in the New Year!

William's Project165.com saw him attempting to set 165 ultra running records before his 65th birthday on October 1st 2018.
