Wings for Life World Run is happening on Sunday 8th May and Team Run247 will be competing and reporting back. This year the UK race takes place at the new venue of Cambridge and it starts at 12pm UK time.
For those of you unfamiliar with Wings for Life, it’s a run that takes place in 35 countries around the world on the same day, at the same time. And this is no normal race, it’s a race where the finish line chases you. All the runners set off together but a chaser car sets off half an hour after the runners and once it catches you, your race is over. Fortunately, the car starts slowly but then speeds up at regular intervals and the driver in the UK, David Coulthard, should be pretty used to that.
Wings for Life is a fantastic concept that began as a vision to get the whole world running at the same time, to leave just one runner standing at the end. It’s not only a fantastic concept, it’s also for a fantastic cause. 100% of entry fees go to spinal cord research.
If you missed the chance to enter or can’t make it to Cambridge you can do your own virtual Wings for Life selfie-run. Download the selfie-run app here, set off a the same time as the worldwide events and see how far you can get! If you’re running in one of the organised runs or on your own selfie-run you can use Robbie Britton’s top tips for Wings for Life.
If you can’t run on Sunday you can still follow the action via the live feed. For the first hour, it will feature highlights from last year’s event, information about the Wings For Life charity and general pre-event of all the participants getting ready.
At 12:00pm the event will be broadcast live and it will dip in and out of coverage from the 35 countries taking part in the event. The main focus will be Cambridge, however it will show different experiences of each race from around the world.
The coverage of the event will be hosted by Colin Jackson and it will feature interviews with some of the famous runners taking part in the race including rugby players Jamie Roberts, George North and Max Evans. As well as, Wings for Life ambassador Martyn Ashton – those are just a number of the guys taking part in the UK leg of the race! Plus team Run247 of course - Kirsty, Paul, Sue and Michael.
