Pear drops and rhubarb and custard given a 21st century makeover by MuscleFood

What do Pear Drops and Rhubarb and Custard make you think of? They take me right back to the 1970s/80s, going to the sweet shop and buying a quarter in a paper bag.
What they don’t make me think of is high-protein recovery treats, but MuscleFood.com has developed a fat and sugar free version with 9.2g of protein (and 188 calories) in a 75g bag. That’s the same amount of protein as two slices of multi-grain bread, half a cup of kidney beans or a handful (1oz) of raw pistachios. The protein is derived from Whey Protein powder which you find in nutritional supplements.
Testers claim the sweets, which retail at £1.19, taste exactly like the retro classics and shoppers on the site are already giving them rave reviews.
Darren Beale from Musclefood.com said: “Just because you’re into fitness, you’re training for an event or you’re just watching what you eat, doesn’t mean you can’t have the odd treat every now and again.
“We developed these sweets after our customers said one of the things they really missed was sweets and especially the retro classics they grew up with.
“We created these sweets for them. They’re never going to be as nutritionally perfect as something like a chicken breast but as an every now and again treat they’re ideal.
“The two we’ve developed have been a big hit with our customers who say they taste just like they remember and give them a treat they can enjoy without feeling guilty.
“If these are popular we may look in to adding other favourites to the range like cola cubes. Let’s face it, who doesn’t love a bit of nostalgia especially when it’s better for you than the original.”
