Runners pulled on their trainers on Sunday 5th June to help make the 2016 Asda Foundation Burnley 10K a fantastic success.
Large, enthusiastic crowds created an electric atmosphere as they cheered the entrants around the event’s new course, which started and finished at pretty Towneley Park.
First across the finish line was Matthew Lalor in a time of 34mins 14secs. Danny Collinge took second place in 35mins 15secs with Dan Balshaw third in 35mins 46secs.
Louisa Powell-Smith was the first woman home in 39mins 15secs followed by Anna Reddy, who clocked 39mins 41secs for second spot and Nicola Nuttall who finished third in 42mins 58secs.
However, charities were the real winners, with a big cash boost expected for a host of good causes, including the event’s partner charities – Jane Tomlinson Appeal, Macmillan Cancer Support, Pendleside Hospice, Burnley Leisure, Every Action Has Consequences and Burnley FC in the Community.
Asda Foundation Senior Manager Julie Ward said: “Once again runners and spectators turned out in force to make the 2016 Burnley 10K another huge success. Everyone who crossed the finish line is to be congratulated, not only on completing the run but also on raising so much money for charity.”
The Mayor of Burnley Cllr Jeff Sumner said: “It’s great that the Asda Foundation Burnley 10K is growing from strength to strength every year. It’s such a credit to the town and everyone who took part in such a wonderful event.
“I’d like to congratulate all participants for completing the challenge and raising cash for good causes. The run brings people from near and far to see the best of Burnley and there’s always a real feeling of community spirit. Well done to each and every one of you!”
Charlie Tatman, event manager with organisers Run For All, said: “We are delighted with the support shown for the Burnley 10K. It has been a memorable day and huge thanks must go to the many volunteers who gave their time to make the event such a success.”
Having left Towneley Park, the new course took the along Todmorden Road, along Belvedere Road, in the shadow of Burnley Football Club, and into Thompson Park before returning for the grand finish back at Towneley Park.
The Burnley 10K is supported by the Asda Foundation, Motorpoint, 2BR, Burnley Express, Burnley Leisure Trust, Burnley Borough Council, Calico Group, Urbaser, Liberata, ViiSana, Aftershokz and BananaKick.
The race forms part of the hugely popular Asda Foundation 10K Series, which also includes runs in Leeds, York, Hull, Lincoln and Nottingham.
