London bursts with running pride at London 10k

by Press Release
Monday 11th July 2016
The streets of London came alive with pride at the Vitality British 10k London Run, as over 11,000 runners took on the challenge to #RUNTHECAPITAL! Participants were treated to a superstar start, as GB athlete Perri Shakes-Drayton, together with the Deputy Lord Mayor of London, Cllr Jan Prendergast, joined runners on Piccadilly to officially start the race!
Speaking after the race, Perri said: “The atmosphere on the start line and out on course has been incredible today. Seeing so many people take on a race like this in my hometown makes me proud to be from London! I’m always honoured to be involved in events that not only take in everything that is great about our capital city, but also encourage people to get active and take on a personal challenge! Congratulations to everyone that took part!”
The men’s race was won by Paul Whittaker in 32:32 seconds, followed by Peter Tucker in 34:05 seconds, and Matthew Wiersum in 32:22. The women’s race was won by Hannah Walker in 35:28 seconds, followed by Rachel Felton in 35:43 seconds, and Alison Lavender took third in 34:05 seconds.
Boasting a brand new route which incorporated the scenic stretch of Embankment and Westminster Bridge, in addition to passing the iconic sights of St. James's Palace, Trafalgar Square, the London Eye, Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey, the unique London event even treated runners to a spectacular one-of-a-kind finish on Whitehall!

Cllr Jan Prendergast, Deputy Lord Mayor of Westminster, said: “It was a great pleasure and honour for me to be asked to start the race this morning with Perri Shakes-Drayton. There was a wonderful atmosphere on the start line, and great camaraderie among the participants. I hope everyone who participated this morning will have had a fantastic day in London. Please return again next year! I am delighted that so many worthy charities will now benefit from your efforts today. Well done to everyone involved!”
Jamie Warren, Head of Marketing at GO2 Events, said: “We have seen an incredible level of interest in this year’s event, and we are inspired that so many people came together to take on the Vitality British 10k London Run as their challenge for 2016, and achieved something great! Congratulations to everyone that took part!”
Neville Koopowitz, CEO at Vitality, commented: “We were delighted to see so many runners take part in today’s Vitality British 10K London Run. It was a superb turnout and we look forward to our next event -The Vitality Oxford Half Marathon on Sunday 9th October.”
Jo Finnerty, Epilepsy Research UK Events Fundraiser said: “This has been such an exciting opportunity for Epilepsy Research UK in our 25th anniversary year, and what a fantastic day it has been! We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone in Team ERUK for flying the flag for us and supporting our research - it has been wonderful to see so many runners out there today!  Epilepsy affects 1 in 103 people in the UK alone and events like these are so important to us to both raise awareness of the condition and to help us boost funds. We are so thankful for everyone's support!”
Patrik Ewe, ‎UK Manager at Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, said: “Today was a great day in London for all of our runners, who loved the course, camaraderie and atmosphere! We had young people from projects, through to employees from our corporates all coming together for this great 10km route around central London!”
