Lake District Trail Running book review

I like the adventure of arriving somewhere new with a map, a backpack and no kind of plan as much as the next person. But sometimes I think it would be really nice if somebody just suggested some nice running routes to me. You know, guaranteed nice ones that don’t run the risk of being 10 miles of bog or involve a lot of burnt-out cars. Sometimes it’s also really nice to not be stopping every few minutes to look at a map. Well, help is at hand with this beautiful little new book from Helen Mort: Lake District Trail Running.

When I say ‘beautiful little book’ I really mean it. It’s a small format book, that would fit easily in your hand when running, or sit in your bumbag or backpack, and it’s beautifully illustrated with stunning photos throughout. Despite it being a lovely-looking book what I like most about it is that it’s designed to be used, not sat on your coffee table. This books deserves to become dog-eared and splattered with mud, pages stuck together with bits of cheese sandwich.

This book describes 20 running routes in the Lake District, ranging from 5k to 17k and spread all over the area. It starts with a few helpful suggestions on what kit to take with you and how to stay safe in an unpredictable environment like the Lakes. There’s also a helpful appendix at the end listing tourist information centres, outdoor shops and, most importantly, cafes and places to get food. Then for each run it has:
  • a stunning photo taken on that route
  • an introduction about the route, and statistics like distance, ascent, how hard the route/navigation is, how long it might take
  • an altitude profile (this will be very handy)
  • a detailed OS map
  • a good route description
Basically, everything you need but instead of having to take a guide book, a map and rely on googling things like ‘best sandwiches in Grasmere’, it’s all in one handy little book!

If you’re a fan of trail running and you’re planning a visit to the Lakes I can’t recommend this book highly enough. It really is a perfectly put together book which will give you a lot of joy out on the fells, or even just on your sofa if you're plotting your next trip.

Lake District Trail Running by Helen Mort is published by Vertebrate Publishing and priced at £12.95.

About The Author

Kirsty Reade

I’d describe myself as borderline obsessed with running, racing, reading about running, and watching others run so hopefully I’m fairly typical of Run247’s visitors. I tend to do longer races, particularly off-road marathons and ultras, but am pretty much a fan of any distance. I'm passionate about helping runners of all levels to improve through running communities I'm involved in, such as Underground Ultra and Free Range Runners.
