Early bird rates for Kielder Marathon Weekend

by Press Release
Monday 14th November 2016
Runners and riders are being given an opportunity to save money when entering one of the North East’s most beautiful sporting events, the Active Northumberland Kielder Marathon Weekend 2017.
The opening of entries to the 2017 sporting event comes as Active Northumberland has confirmed it will continue to support the weekend.
The 2017 event will once again involve not only the Kielder Marathon and Half Marathon, but also the Kielder 10k, Run Bike Run and a series of children’s races, taking place across the weekend of October 7 and 8, 2017.
Early bird entry prices are available from now until December 31, 2016*.
In 2016, some 3,200 competitors signed up for the races, which take place on the banks of Northumbrian Water's Kielder Water, Northern Europe’s largest man-made lake. The entrants take in some of Britain’s most beautiful scenery.
The weekend is run by Events of the North, a company led by Olympians Steve Cram and Allison Curbishley, in conjunction with Northumbrian Water, Active Northumberland, and Northumberland County Council.
Councillor Val Tyler, Cabinet Member for Arts, Leisure and Culture at Northumberland County Council, said: “Every year the Kielder Marathon gives competitors and spectators the opportunity to be part of something special and puts Northumberland firmly in the spotlight.
"This year was no exception, with runners coming from all over the world to enjoy our breathtaking scenery, soak up the atmosphere of a major sporting event, and challenge themselves by running a marathon on the more rugged Northumberland terrain.
"I am delighted that our partners are already on board with the event for 2017. Let's make it the most successful one yet!”
David Hall, Northumbrian Water’s Head of Leisure Strategy, said: “The Active Northumberland Kielder Marathon 2016 was a huge success, with some excellent races and a brilliant all-round atmosphere. It’s fantastic to once again be using one of our operational assets for such a brilliant event, showing that something as functional as a reservoir can also be a hub of activity for the community and visitors.
“The continuing partnership with Active Northumberland is a real boost to the event. They have been an excellent partner in bringing together a fantastic weekend of sport in the most beautiful part of the UK and this continues their support of local sporting events.”
Race Director Steve Cram said: “We are delighted that Active Northumberland has chosen to remain as a partner of the Kielder Marathon Weekend.
“The support of all of our partners is vital in making this fantastic event a huge success, year on year. We are always astounded by and grateful for the levels of support we get from the organisations in and around Northumberland who come together to make Kielder Marathon Weekend a must for runners and riders from around the country.”
