In recovery

“Sunday Runday”. How those days haunted me whilst I was training for the Royal Parks Half and the TCS New York City Marathon. I would get up every Sunday morning in fear, knowing that I would hurt from 14 / 15 miles onwards and I would be reduced to a wreck on the front room floor afterwards. Unable to move and stuck with a lukewarm coffee and some chocolate for several hours as I was in pain and I ached, I used to sit there and just think ‘when would this feeling stop?’
 
As the weeks went on the feeling never really did stop, however I had to do more than take a recovery shake and stretch often as I was in a world of pain at times. Then the came the decision to seek help of some 2XU “recovery compression tights” as a way of combating the pain and speeding up my recovery with the headlines of “reduced muscle soreness” and “reduced fatigue” being the main unique selling points and offering me a way through this pain. 
 
So imagine with me for a moment: “the sensation you have once you have crossed the line of a marathon, medal around your neck and wrapped up in one of the race’s life saving silver foil blankets and you are now you make the walk to bag drop”. Once the adrenaline has subsided a little, you realise you are struggling to walk and you just hurt. Every step aches and this is where I find the best demonstration of these leggings, the walk (or hobble) from the finish line at the TCSNYC Marathon to your hotel room. 
 
On crawling into the shower, crying at the water hitting you and finally putting new clothes on - I put the leggings on (not for the first time but the sorely needed at this moment) and then my jeans over them. The best way to describe the initial sensation is really tight clothing, wrapping  around your legs and muscles, stimulating the blood within them to work faster. It feels as if your muscles are almost being gently prodded and caressed, willing your legs back into life.

As I put my medal back on and began to walk back to Central Park to see some of the thousands of people come in - my legs slowly freed up, forgetting the 26.2 miles of pure hell that I had put them through, and wanted to move. They began to be happy to move. This feeling got better and better as time went on and yes I could feel the dull ache, but it was not task to sit, move or walk from my booth to the bar and order another beer chatting to everyone about the marathon. It became bearable to walk to the diner that evening serving dinner and I was still hobbling; but I was not stiff and I certainly wasn’t complaining about moving. 
 
This is representative of how these leggings transformed my training and my recovery. They meant that the blues of “Sunday Runday” had gone, I was no longer confined to the front room floor and instead I was able to impact the time my training had on other commitments. I do not understand the science behind these leggings, but I do know that on wearing them I would feel better, more mobile and after several hours I would certainly be in a much better place than I would be previously. 
 
For seasoned athletes or those embarking on their first magical journey to the finish line, these have to be an essential purchase if you are even thinking of upping the miles and you, like me, dread the run and the horrid aftermath as you lie there on a Sunday. They almost free your legs again and help you feel normal, despite the exertions.

I am 33 years old and spend the majority of my life within an office environment. Whilst I played football, I never really took an interest in sport let alone athletics. In 2011 I joined a gym as I was slightly concerned about my weight. However I was, like an awful lot of my colleagues, coasting and I considered spinning three times a week a workout.
 
This changed when I took up a circuits class and found myself entering Men’s Health Survival of the Fittest London in November 2011. I was assured by my friends that this was a good idea and would be a “challenge”.
 
I had never entered any form of competitive event before and training for this run changed me. I listened to my personal trainer, who assured me that if I quit drink I could be dangerous, and sorted out my diet, stopped drinking so much and focussed my training. I completed the race in just over an hour and I was instantly bitten by the racing bug, I loved the challenge the event offered. 
 
Nearly two years on I have completed a half marathon in 1hour 49 minutes, came 6th in the Rat Race Horseplay 5k event and usually come within the top 30% at Obstacle Course races. I am also a part time triathlete and I am lucky to find myself in a running club where we have a great coach and the focus is on members. If I am honest - I came to running through these events and I am not alone.
 
My aim through Run 247 is to promote, discuss and publicise Obstacle Course racing. It is becoming huge and over the coming months we will cover all of the major races and the new competitors entering the scene.
