Record number of runners at Cancer Research London Winter Run

by Press Release
Monday 6th February 2017

On Sunday 5th February a record 16,500 runners took to the closed streets of central London to take part in the annual Cancer Research UK London Winter Run – now hailed as the capital’s largest 10k.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “As Mayor I’m keen to encourage Londoners to stay active and healthy. This event is a fantastic opportunity for both regular runners and those new to the sport to keep fit through the winter. I’m really pleased it’s back for a third successful year and helping to raise crucial funds for Cancer Research UK”

Winter Run

Joining the thousands of runners on the course were BBC newsreader Sophie Raworth and presenter Scola Dondo. Winter themed entertainment was provided throughout including a ‘Penguin Party’, a Swiss themed water station and live music on the course. Rewards for those who finished included an intricately designed winter medal and a hug from a team of ‘polar bears’ as they crossed the line.

The event not only keeps people active through the winter months, but also raises vital funds for Cancer Research UK. This year’s event is aiming to raise a huge six figure sum to help contribution to the fight against cancer, with donations still coming in over the coming days.

Clive Sanders, Head of Events at Cancer Research UK, said: “The Winter Run is such a fun way to help give cancer the cold shoulder. Half of people diagnosed with the disease now survive. But half is not enough. That’s why we need as many people as possible to raise vital funds for research which will save the lives of more, men women and children.”

Nick Rusling, CEO of Human Race, said “The team at Human Race would like to say big congratulations to all those who have taken part and supported this year’s event. It has been an absolute pleasure organising this event, but it wouldn’t be possible without the hard work and cooperation from a huge number of volunteers and a number of partners. Thank you to everybody who has helped. The team are now looking forward to another huge event in Manchester next Sunday!”

The Cancer Research UK Winter Run Series will now move to the city of Manchester for the next race on 12th February 2017. To find out more about the event, and to register visit www.winterrunseries.co.uk
