Fancy volunteering at the Shrewsbury Half?

by Press Release
Monday 5th June 2017
The organisers of the Shrewsbury Half Marathon, UKRunChat Events, are recruiting volunteers to help the race repeat the success of 2016, its first year since it took over this much-loved event in Shropshire.
Taking place on Sunday 18th June 2017, the Shrewsbury Half Marathon has plenty of opportunities for people to be involved in the event if they are unable to run. It is a brilliant chance to experience the excitement of race day whilst lending valuable support to a day of sporting achievement and family fun.
Volunteer positions cover various jobs such as start and finish race helpers, on-course marshals, water station helpers, race village helpers, and general race day support and assistance. No prior experience is necessary – just 4-6 hours spare on the day, a big smile and a positive attitude! A full volunteer briefing takes place two weeks before race day.
The Shrewsbury Half Marathon takes runners through the Medieval town centre, past hundreds of listed buildings and down steep narrow streets, before heading out into the verdant Shropshire countryside. It is one of the UK’s most picturesque half marathons and will this year welcome a high proportion of returning runners wanting to soak up the friendly atmosphere and stunning setting.
The race village is located at the Shropshire County Showground, where the race begins and ends. The 53-acre venue will be open from 7.30am-1pm and a number of volunteer positions will be based here, helping at the start and the end of the race and ensuring the smooth running of the entertainment, activities and catering within the race village.
Director of UKRunChat Joe Williams commented, “There are many people in the local community who have an interest in running but may not be able to run the 13.1 miles of the Shrewsbury Half. Signing up as a volunteer is a great way to be part of race day and help hands-on whilst enjoying plenty of interaction with the runners, spectators and the rest of the volunteer team. We’d love to hear from anyone who has a few hours free to help.
“Places have been snapped up fast for the 2017 Shrewsbury Half Marathon and if there are any runners yet to register we would encourage them to do so now. There are less than 150 places left and it promises to be the biggest and best Shrewsbury Half yet.”
The Mayor of Shrewsbury, Councillor Jane MacKenzie, will be the official starter of the Shrewsbury Half Marathon and local running celebrity Amy Hughes, of 53 Marathons fame, will be leading the warm-up before joining in the race herself. For the first time this year the Shrewsbury Half Marathon will also be providing race pacing to help runners hit their target times.
An inspiring Kids Race will take place shortly after the half marathon starts, with 75 young runners of all abilities from Harlescott Junior and Belvidere Primary running 1.1 mile.
Registration for the Shrewsbury Half Marathon is open and the last places are expected to sell fast. Entry costs £25.50 for affiliated athletes and £27.50 for non-affiliated athletes. Team entry (x 4) costs £102. Entry to the Kids Race is closed.
To register as a volunteer please fill in the form on the website or email info@ukrunchat.co.uk directly with your name and contact details.
