Today is the day that Mimi Anderson starts her World Record attempt to be the fastest woman to cross America. The current record for the 2850 mile challenge from LA to New York is 69 days but Mimi aims to do it in 53.
Mimi already has a few World Records under her belt, including John O’Groats to Land’s End and M2M (Malin Head to Mizen Head, the north to south of Ireland), and is well-known for her epic challenges and tough races. Mimi ran the Freedom Trail in South Africa in 2014 (2350km), she’s run a Double Badwater, a Double Grand Union Canal, and finished (and usually won) races in inhospitable climates from deserts to the Arctic.
But this will be Mimi’s biggest challenge to date. The record has stood since 1979 and there’s probably a good reason for that. How about this for a daily routine:
4.30am get up, get dressed, eat breakfast
5am hit the road and run
Midday have a little break of 20 - 30 mins to eat and have a massage
Run lots more and finish mid-evening, for more food, massage and finally sleep
I can imagine that this would be really fun for one day. Sustaining this for 53 days is going to be unimaginably tough, but if there’s one person who does unimaginably tough, it’s Mimi Anderson.
Mimi is raising funds for Marie Curie (who provide support and care to people with a terminal illness) and Free to Run (supporting women and girls who live in or have fled conflict zones by empowering and educating them through sport) on her run.
