Tom Evans, Runderwear ambassador, tells us about his recent UTMB CCC experience....
Tom, congratulations on your fantastic 4th place at the CCC. What were the highlights of the race for you?
Thank you very much. I had run the course before with two good friends, Mike Jones and Jorge Maravilla, so I knew what to expect. My Dad was crewing me on the course so it was great to see him at the check points. Crossing the line is always a highlight. A lot of time and effort goes into these performances and its nice when you have a good day!
While 4th place is obviously a massive achievement there must have been a little bit of you that wondered if you could have made the top 3. What will it take for you to do that next time?
I am really happy with my top 4 position, especially considering that this was my 2nd 100km race. The guys who finished on the podium are superb athletes and they deserved to finish where they did.

What did you do after the race to celebrate your result?
After very slowly walking to my hotel and trying to get the shower to work, I went for a big meal with a couple of friends. I never sleep very well then night after a race as I am always thinking about the race and what lessons I can learn so I didn’t get much sleep at all!
How does the Army support your career as an athlete?
The Welsh Guards have been great at supporting my running career. The British Army is at the forefront of Sport in the UK and I am very lucky to have been able to compete at this level.
Do you have any more races lined up for this year?
So I am now hitting the roads for a couple of months in the build up to Frankfurt marathon, this is so I can focus on my technique and improve my running economy. I then may be racing in Cape Town in December but I need to sort some things out with work first!

What are your longer term plans?
I am racing TCC Costa Rica in February next year. After that I have a couple of big events that I am planning on targeting, the Trail World Champs, The UK 100km Champs and the 100km World Champs. As well as this I will be racing in the Ultra Trail World Tour and the Sky Running Series. Trying to build on my performances this year and improve as a runner.
Can you tell us about your race prep and your top 3 must have pieces of kit for race day?
I am pretty relaxed before a race. Before CCC I ended up watching heaps of Disney DVDs, my new favourite film is Ratatouille!

For me, I only use kit that I trust:
1.   At the top of my list are my Merino Runderwear Briefs. They are the best underwear on the market and I don’t go anywhere without them - 100% seamless, you don't even know you're wearing them.
2.   Nutrition and fuel is essential for racing and preparing everything is key. I use Torq gels and shot blocks for my food. For my hydration, I use Precision Hydration 1000. My most important drink is RedBull, it ‘gives me wings’ the edge in the last 3rd of the race!
3.   My Hoka Speedgoat 2s were great in CCC. They are super comfy and have a superb grip, using the new vibram mega grip.
Runderwear provides 100% seamless and moisture wicking high performance sports underwear. To find out more about the award winning range, visit www.runderwear.co.uk
