The organisers of the Nevis Marathon and Running Festival have confirmed that the annual event will run as usual in 2018.
The announcement comes after organisers of this year’s event were left with no alternative but to cancel the popular festival. This was after adverse weather conditions, as a result of Hurricane Irma, disrupted final preparations. Despite the island not sustaining any serious damage, from a health and safety perspective, the decision was made to cancel proceedings.
The Nevis Marathon and Running Festival, which has never until now been cancelled, was due to take place 7-9 September 2017. The three-day festival, which is set in one of the most unspoilt destinations in the Caribbean, incorporates a variety of distances including 5km, 10km half and the ever-popular full marathon, which circles the entire volcanic island, allowing athletes to experience Nevis from all angles.
Greg Phillip, CEO of the Nevis Tourism Authority and head of the event, said of the cancellation: “We were compelled to cancel the 2017 edition of the Nevis Marathon and Running Festival because of the passage of Hurricane Irma. It was a necessary decision despite our recognition that this was shaping up to be one of our best and most competitive events with perhaps the largest field of international athletes in the races’ history. We thank those who registered and were planning to travel from the UK, USA and various other countries. In 2018 the Nevis Marathon and Running Festival will take place from September 6th to 8th.”
The Nevis Marathon and Running Festival, which welcomes visitors from all over the globe, offers one of the most exceptional and challenging running experiences. Those taking part are able to enjoy outstanding vistas throughout.
The yearly event will resume as normal in 2018 and registration will be available from January 2018.
