UNIT RINSE: a revolutionary new way to fuel

You might remember seeing some research in the news about swilling a sports drink round in your mouth having a positive effect on performance. This was an important research finding (see the references at the foot of this article) and one company has developed a product based on it. The company is Unit Nutrition and the product is UNIT RINSE, the world's first commercially available nutritional mouth rinse.
UNIT RINSE comes in a small bottle and it’s primarily designed for any exercise lasting up to one hour. It comes in 3 flavours - root beer float, mixed berry and peach mango - and you swill it around in your mouth for 5 to 10 seconds, before swallowing it. However, you still get the benefits even if you spit it out!
The science bit is that the carbohydrate in the drink stimulates the carbohydrate sensors in the mouth. This activates the areas of the brain associated with pleasure, reward, motivation and motor control, which in turn decreases your perception of fatigue, giving you a performance boost.
Unit Nutrition was one of the sponsors of the Great Britain team at the 2017 IRONMAN World Championships in Kona. The product has been used by elite athletes for a while but this is the first time that it’s been commercially available and it’s an exciting development in sports nutrition.

Unit Nutrition was also named headline sponsor at this year's annual Nevis Triathlon (11th November 2017), and provided all athletes with locally sourced tamarind balls in addition to the high-in-carb UNIT RINSE. While UNIT RINSE is sufficient to fuel short duration exercise, after approximately one hour of exercise it’s important to use the product in conjunction with a higher carbohydrate source, hence the reason tamarind balls were offered to complement the UNIT RINSE in the longer distance triathlon.
At Run247 we’re really interested in its use for those times when you’re having trouble eating/drinking during longer runs. Could it give you a boost in your performance when you’re struggling and your stomach isn’t playing ball?
